Have owned my 1098s for a good few years now, I've had some of the usual Duke niggles which I have put up with and resolved. However I recently opened the garage door to find the speedo display screen crazed and cracked! I do have a double bubble fitted I belive it was fitted by Motorapido from new! However I have always covered the speedo screen with the my gloves when I'm out and about and leave the bike parked up in the extremely rare Welsh sun! I have sent Ducati UK an email as I've had several bikes over the years which have never failed in this way. Although my bike is 9 years old it has been loved and cherished yet the speedo / dash screen for no fault of my own has gone this way! Cheap crap plastic used which has a limited life before it breaks down and fails! The replacement is £800+ from Motorapido. Interestingly they completely play dull when I mention that it is a common fault that lots of people have experienced. They told me to try Ducati UK. Still no response from them... shock horror! To be honest as much as I love my bike this is a step too far on the whole 'Ducati quirks' front. I have come to the point where I want to sell the bike and go back to a boring but predictable Jap bike if for nothing more than my sanity! But how can I P/X the bike with a tacho screen that looks like it has been attacked with a toffee hammer! Very disappointed, as I say never had this sort of unprofessionalism on any of my past JAP bikes. Granted they also didn't look, sound or ride anything like the 1098 either! You would think that Ducati wouldn't want any of their bikes on the road with unsightly cracked dash screens, it looks absolutley aweful and taints the brand image. Anyway, I'm in the market for a replacement unit if anyone has one for sale? I need to make the bike look appealing enough to p/x is with a dealer against a different bike. I'll never will I buy Ducati again.
Have found quite alot of info online on this - Some people say its the use of double bubble screens, UV light and sunlight magnified through the double bubble causes the screen to overheat and crack. It seems to be a case of 'when' not 'if' it will happen for all 1098 owners. And Ducati simply do not want to know! I'm in the middle of reading up on a fix that someone posted up on another Ducati forum. It seems like the most cost effective way around the issue is to buy a carbon screen surround and with some acrylic etc... looks like a potch but the end result looks spot on, if nothing else it's a more cost effective way of puttin the bike right to sell it.
How convexed is the dash screen? It may be possible to have an acrylic one laser cut. My wife has access to a laser cutter and they are insane, cutting certain materials gives awesome results, etching is fantastic too. I guess the biggest headache would be removing the dash and stripping it but for the price of a new unit I'd certainly explore repairing it... just my humble opinion
Hi Andy, Apparently the screen is injection moulded into the black sreen surround so it can't be popped out and heat also doesn't soften any adhesive, so the answer is to cut it out. But you can't get the welded / injection moulded edge or seam section out. I guess the only way of seeing that through would be to get the original front surround milled out from behind by a specialist and then you might stand a chance of fitting a new screen but only then if you were able to form the outline and bevel to sit into the surround. It seems the best way is to heat and then mold an acrylic sheet to sit inside a carbon fibre overlay and then to glue and seal that against the original clock unit. There is a guy on another forum that has uploaded photographs of his work, and in fairness it looks very impressive. I'm not against trying that if needs be as it is far cheaper than the cost of a new unit! But I'm not sure it will look quite right to my picky eyes. Ducati really are a shower of cack! A bike with this sort of of original cost should never be subject to this sort of issue, and what's more Ducati should never be allowed to turn their back on the customer. Shocking situation, really has changed my opinion on Ducati as a company. I know they aren't alone, a mate of mine has an '09 Aprilia RSV4 Factory, and the headlight bulbs keeps melting through the light unit into the air intakes situated below, Aprilia do not want to know, it was a common problem on the 09 plate bikes. Almost 16K he paid for it and they basically stick the middle finger up. As I said I'm getting out of Ducati ownership ASAP and will avoid all Italian bikes in future. At least the JAP bike parts are plentyful and thankfull rarely go wrong.
Just had my cracked dash replaced today on a 959 panigale. Thank God it is still under warranty. But every time I ride the bike something breaks or falls off. There will be nothing left after the 3 years when it's time to change or give it back I fear.
This is another kick in the nuts by Ducati, can't be considered wear and tear. And the fix is a great big 'bend over and take it up trap 2'. There comes a point where you have to draw a line. I'm not continuing to line thier pockets like a drone. £800+ quid for this is more than enough to put me off buying another from Mario and Luigi!
Yep It's becoming one of those bikes. Awesome to ride cant fault it. Sunday's ride I lost the rear brake reservoir lid. And stone smashed my indicator on the mirror. I also seem to aquire stone chips after every ride but what can you do.
Not good but it sounds like you have the bike on a pcp? If so, you'll likley change it every 3 years or so, so the whole while most of the faults will be covered under warranty. But your not the first I have heard say thay their Panigale has had to go back in for major work under warranty. Sounds like Audi need to start kicking some pasta tossing arse!
I don't I even started going out without my mates and still get them. Think some are coming off my front wheel.
Throwing stones up off the front wheel is probably built into the design by Ducati to ensure they get their fill out of you in spare parts!
First thing I did was to stick a motographix protector on the nose of mine, had it customised in the same red as the bike so at first glance you can't see it.
Where a lot of owners go wrong is they actually ride them rather than just putting in the front room and looking at. Bloody heathens. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Grem, is/was your double bubble a black/dark one or clear, or does that not matter (from your research)?
I still love the handling, sound and looks of my 1098. But at some point you have to draw a line. Especially when they start royally taking the P#ss on the cost of such things like the speedo display then no longer will I be so foolish to line thier pockets.
Just leave the crscked ones on for now and keep an eye out for a used set on ebay. Then wait until you sell to put them on.
