899 Oil Leak Really Confused

  1. Hi Guys thanks in advance

I took my 899 into my local dealership for them to look at a eml fault and whilst it's there I asked them to do a oil and filter as trackday season is about to start.

I collected the bike yesterday and rode it 40 miles back, on the way I noticed the back end was twitching and caused me some concern. When I arrived back at my unit the bike inc the tyres are covered in oil and due to the distance the whole bike is smoking with burning oil!

The dealer collected the bike this morning which was fair enough and rushed it back to inspect it.

Now my problem is they have phoned to say the leaks from the fact I've had a 1199 valve cover fitted (with a genuine brand new gasket)

Ok they say a sealing ring is missing from one of the bolts which I can see would cause the problem but what I can't understand is that the bike has done 2-3 trackdays and over a thousand miles since this was fitted? And yet they do an oil and filter and I ride home and get oil everywhere and I mean everywhere and it's worse on the right hand side of the bike

I need your advice pls as it doesn't add up to me

    Thanks again in advance

I'd just like to point out I'm not slating the dealership but it was fine before it had the oil changed

  2. Sounds like you got away lightly with that mate,as you know oil and filter change is quite simple with only 3 items being disturbed, oil filler and thats pretty obvious if that was missing, drain plug then again obvious if it was missing, less so if it worked loose but i would not think a loose sump bolt would lose lots of oil,oil filter cover would be my bet, lose or forgot to put o rings in, but that is on the lhs(sitting on the bike) of the bike, not sure where over filled oil would show its self, guess you will never know but it could of ended in tears.

  3. Like you say you did track days etc before and only after getting bike from dealer did it happen....
Don't fall for it, there fault I would say, end of.

  4. I'm thinking it was over filled then it spat it out at the weakest point?

  5. As far as I am aware any excess will be blown into the air box, that's where the crank case breather normally goes.

  6. Just can't understand how it was fine before and then I ride away and it blows? Coincident I guess

  7. If the dealer only did an oil and filter change then my guess would be the filter leaking, not tightened up or a damaged seal.

  8. Got to be filter cover or loose plug. Looks like they're covering up their mistake.

I had a dealer leave my whole RH fairing panel loose, flapping around down the M3 after a service.

Attention to detail is rare these days.

  9. Was it a dealer at the south end of the m3?
