Looking at removal of my rear wheel and wondered if someone could tell me what size socket I need to buy have heard its 55mm but wanted confirmation. Thanks.
Hi zxstu, yup it's a 55mm rear. Bought one of these recently for taking with me on the bike just in case I get a puncture anywhere as not many people carry 55mm sockets - Steel Ducati 1098/1198 SF MTS1200 wheel nut socket It's bloody heavy but covers both front and rear and is made from steel so shouldn't bust easily.
What Rollo said... A standard 55mm socket isn't the best thing to use... Being so large they are also very tall meaning that you have to apply the torque well away from the nut. It's very easy to slip off the nut because of this. Also a standard socket is only six points of contact whereas one of the special tools has 12 points. Lastly, the nut is on VERY tight. I cannot shift mine without the use of an impact driver, and a standard chrome socket risks catastrophic failure if used with an impact driver. Machine Mart do a Clarks mains impact driver for around £65 which is capable of undoing the nut.
