848 Sprocket

  1. Hi all

Just changed chain and sprockets to Renthal sprockets with 520 conversion and 39t rear. I have been considering trying a 41 tooth rear as it's such an easy job now......daft question....where does the speedo run from?

    thanks all

  2. Don't worry the speedo is not effected, the only problem you will have is with your nice new chain....if you got a stock length 98 link chain it will be too short for the 41t sprocket....:frown:

  3. Damn......there is quite a lot of slack when I adjust......

  4. I just managed to get my 98 link chain around both sprockets, but my ride height was altered dramatically (not a real problem as I have an adjuster fitted) due to the eliptical cam rotation of the rear hub.

The problem lies in the clearance between the tire and the swing arm...just below where your hugger is.

Check the clearance there now....you should find you can fit your finger in there, between the tire and swing arm, now move your chain to as slack as you think you need for the 41t sprocket.....you'll find the clearance is mm's at best or hard up, locking the wheel against the swing arm more likely.

There is some calculation to work out how many extra links are required per extra tooth....but I can't remember it.

Have a look on gearing commanders website....is loaded with all sorts of info on gearing etc.

  5. Perhaps i'd be better going for the 14 front......

  6. Opinions are divided as to whether that's the best option or not, but that's what I and many others have done...:upyeah:

  7. Loads of people do the 14t front....just just be aware of the 'supposed' increased wear rate due to the tighter circumference, especially with the lighter chain and keep an eye on your chain slider for wear too.

  8. Just ordered a 14.....let's see how it performs! Did the same thing on a ZZR1200 a few years ago and it transformed the bike at low speeds/around town

  9. I have one and you won't be disappointed.

  10. Sorry to drag this one back from the dead, but when you say "increased wear rate" are you talking about the chain and front sprocket, or other components too?

  11. Anth is referring to chain and front sprocket

  12. No probs. That's what I thought. I'm looking ahead a bit and thought this mod sounded good but wanted to know more before I went away researching rear sprockets and new chain sizes. I think I'll do the 14t front option to start with at least.

  13. I rode an 848 on low gearing and thought it was crap.

  14. 41 rear is IMHO the best option on the 848, but as above you will need a longer chain, that's why a lot go for the cheap option of 14 front. I reckon the 41 tooth rear is one of the best mods you can do to the 848, and I will be doing it at PDI on the Evo Corse when it arrives regardless of the cost :)

  15. :upyeah: It was certainly worth loosing the 2-3 mph at the very top for the extra usability everywhere else in the range for my money :upyeah:

  16. I am thinking I might do this too for when I take delivery of the bike, but that is maybe daft considering I won't have even ridden my own bike before modding the gearing.

I'll speak to the dealer about it and see what they say and how much they'd do it for. Then I'll figure out if I go ahead or not I guess.

    Cheers.

  17. If they do it at PDI, they have a new chain and sprocket set for stock that they could credit you for to offset the cost?! just a thought :upyeah:

  18. Hmm. I'll see what they say. I'm in there this weekend as it happens so I'll bounce it off the guy while I'm there.

Can't imagine lower gearing being a bad idea really. It's going to reduce top speed, increase acceleration, wheelie a bit more easily and reduce tank range marginally. It doesn't even alter the speedo reading... Beginning to sound like a no-brainer.

Maybe it's one for a couple of months into ownership though...
