  1. OK you collective clever clogs.

Have you ever heard of a problem where a faulty clutch switch can cause misfiring and general loss of power?

The possible scenario is that the ECU thinks the clutch is always pulled in.

  2. Not heard of that but it could be true I suppose.

  3. Not sure that I qualify as a "clever clogs" but sounds a bit unlikely to me... The only role that I know of for that micro-switch is to determine whether the bike can be started or not, depending on the position of the side stand and whether the bike is in gear or not, as in the attached schematic.

If you disconnect and/or short out the switch, do you get full power back?

    Jut my 2p worth.

  4. Clutch switch is go/no go so I think your problem lays somewhere else. Andy

  5. Yep, I can't see any other use for the clutch switch other than to allow the bike to start or not depending on the gearbox position.

  6. Here's the story:

I had a terrible day racing on Friday because the bike had a misfire around 7Krpm and was generally down on power. I told the previous owner about this and he said that he once had exactly the same problem with the bike and paid £3000 in fault finding only to eventually discover that the clutch lever switch does more within the ECU than anybody believed. It was short circuit and the ECU will not let the bike rev properly when it thinks the clutch lever is pulled in.

This was BEFORE I told him that I had replaced the clutch lever when I arrived at the track. It's the only change to the bike apart from brake pads since I last rode it where this misfire didn't happen.

So maybe when I changed the lever I mangled the microswitch. It was only when he started telling me that he had the exact same symptoms that a light bulb went on in my head.

Plausable? The bike is with a Ducati specialist in Budapest who I'll call tomorrow and ask about the switch.

  7. I think someone had a similar problem with a hyper, IIRC the damaged switch turned out to be effecting the fly by wire throttle operation.
    @Daddy2coull wasn't it?

  8. I didn't think the 1x98 bikes were fly-by-wire?

Do you have another clutch lever with a working micro-switch? If the misfire goes away when you fit this???

  9. The bike is with a specialist in Budapest and I'm in Munich. The previous owner swears this was the cause last time but I have to wait for confirmation from Budapest.

  10. You're right, was the only example I could think of.

  11. why does the picture on this post state that

when in gear, stand up, clutch in, the engine cuts out.

impossible it would stall the bike every time you tried to change gear

  12. It doesn't - It's showing the "logic" it uses to allow power to the starter motor/solenoid

  13. I assume you're referring to the last to lines? The way I read those is:

With the bike in gear, clutch released, stand up the starter motor can't be operated

If you pull the clutch in, it can.

I.e. the last column in the table says whether or not the starter motor will work, not whether the engine will run or not, in other words whether there is an output from the ECU to the starter motor or not.

    I could be wrong though!

    As Tobytyke said!!!

  14. forgetting starting.

the coloum before states engine shutoff.

ever put your stand down and you bike cuts out? that thing....

  15. I thought the "Engine Stop" column referred to the position of the kill switch on the right-hand bar, it's "On" in every row except the first. The scenario you describe (engine cuts when in gear and side stand down) is rows 4 and 5, there the starter motor signal is turned off.

  16. My mates 1098r started misbehaving like this. We traced it to a dodgy TC module. Knock off TC just to eliminate from your troubleshooting.

  17. I did that. Turned it off and it made no difference.

  18. in which i would say row 3 is incorrect with

in gear, clutch released, stand down. engine stop 'on'

that should turn the engine off.

the diagram does do explain these bits.

  19. surly thats the engine start, coloum

  20. Agree with this. A switch is just that... Either open or closed, it'll send a zero or one (true/false) to the ECU. Hard wire it open, try it, if that doesn't work hard wire closed.

If that doesn't sort it my money would be on an earth fault on the loom. And that could be a bugger to find.
