Termignoni 57mm Fitting Instructions

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by PM999S, Jul 26, 2016.

  1. Hi Guys,

As a newbie I've searched and read lots about Termi exhausts on the Forum for my 04 999S. I've bought a complete 57mm stainless system that I'm assured is for my deep sump motor with the smaller grey/sandcast swingarm. Naturally, it's a 2-1-2 system and a lot different from the stock system. Does anyone have fitting instructions or is this just a straight suck-n-see job guessing which bit goes where? Also should I be using pipe cement on assembly as some joints are less tight than others?

  2. No idea but welcome anyway Dave. @nelly may be able to help :)

  3. Lay the system out and join the pieces up. That'll give you a view on how it lays up and what goes where. It pretty much goes on how the other comes off to be fair. The main difference is the length and routing of the rear header. Remove the old system from the back and work forward...silencer first. There are spacers on the RHS footrest mounting iirc to give clearance. Fit any mounting screws loosely, get all the system mounted, then fit the springs. Give it all a "wiggle" to settle then tighten the screws up. Don't use any cement. It'll either set like concrete or crack as the system moves with heat...

  4. And be sure to use some lubricant on the joints when mounting the pipes together.

  5. Thanks for the advice guys especially about the cement which I suspected I should avoid.

  6. Hi Guys,
Sorry to pester again but have finally got to the closing stages of fitting this system but despite spacing rear 2-1 part as far as it can go before it interferes with the right hand footpeg spaced out with those provided, the system still touches the swing arm - just! Is a club hammer the only option which would be a shame to dent something that should fit.

  7. Is the y-piece that goes into the silencer seated as far as it can go?
You can tell by the existing wear mark if it is.
If it's not, it can throw the rest of the system out by a degree or two, as I found out the first time I tried. Top tip is to put the silencer in a deep freezer for an hour to expand the pipes a bit, then put the Y-piece on up to the hilt before bolting it on to the subframe.
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers
    Dave

  8. I thought that one froze parts to shrink them and heated to expand them....

  9. My bad!!
Yes it was the Y-piece I put in the freezer!
    Thanks for pointing that out!

  10. Thanks for that and I will check the seating which could be the problem because the exhaust springs are tighter with the silencer than at other parts of the system. BTW am having trouble sourcing new springs because the set that came with the system are way too long (80mm) while I now need new ones between 70mm and 60mm depending on different parts of the system. Have looked at Termi website but can't see anything.

  11. Try these.

  12. It appears to have taken 9 months to fit this...blimey!

Hope it's sorted soon or you'll miss the "summer".

  13. Yes kept the bike on the road longer than I expected last season so only started the job properly a few weeks ago!

  14. Just a quick update, after seveal hours fitting and refitting pipes to ensure all of them are up-to-the-hilt in their seatings, the damn pipe still touches the swingarm! Looks like no option but a club-hammer, iron rod and a bag of sand to flatten off the inside is the only option unless anyone else has a new idea? The seller had told me he was only selling because it was for the grey swingarm he had bought erroneously because he had the black R-type black box section fitted but beginning to doubt this especially considering none of the springs fit!

  15. I have a 57mm system on my 749R (black swinging arm) and it is a very tight fit. There is virtually zero clearance at the swinging arm.

  16. @PM999S Can you post a pic of the problem area?

  17. Yes that's my point - do I live with the ever so slight touch on the swingarm when unloaded (ie on paddock stands) or dent the pipe? Because, as far as I can see, it would only be touching when jumping the bike, such as a couple of times on Isle of Man at Ballacrye or at Oulton Park?

  18. Dunno. I don't do moto-x on mine!!
Sounds like a gentle tap with a hammer would appease your concerns and also not significantly effect the capability of the exhaust.

  20. I'll post a pic when system all screwed back in and after I'm back from a business trip to States next week...
