So have any of you done anything to your Panigales to manage the under seat heat build up? I have part wrapped the rear section of the exhaust, I only had a couple of metre's but thought i'd give it a try. What I have noticed is how hot the actual seat subframe gets and I think this is the main source of the heat that I can feel whilst riding. I'm not sure what I can do about this? I am going to try some better quality heat wrap and wrap the complete rear section of the exhaust. Thermal Velocity make some good stuff that I used on my Turbo Exige.
It's fine when cruising above say 40 mph, but in built up traffic when the engine is at it's hottest is when I really notice the heat. I'm going to Spain at the end of June so I'm going to try a few things before then. These guy's have some good products to try; http://www.textiletechnologies.co.uk/thermal-velocity
I would be interested to hear what the difference experienced when the sub frame is changed to a Motoholder or Pierobon unit. as my 1299 sub frame is very hot and radiates into the upper part of my leg. not a issue at the moment but would be interested in the data.
I wrapped mine twice then used the paint.... really works! We do the same to the turbo race cars, we've tried all the fancy coatings to keep the heat in the pipe, but wrap always works the best
I know a few guys in the US bought Carbon Subframe covers and claimed it helped a lot...(Seeing as they all seem to ride in shorts and t-shirts I'm not surprised it was hot!) I believe you can get them on ebay as I don't think DP do them???
I'd be careful about wrapping them to hold in the heat that the designers are trying to radiate. My standard (not wrapped) rear heater just cracked. I can only assume holding more heat in there may accelerate this failure...
I was planning on adding some heat shielding under the seat, like someone did on the 899panigale forums, to help lower the underseat issue. This still leaves the sub frame tho, which is the major culprit. Would it be possible to ceramic coat the subframe? I know the 899 one is steel and the 1299 is maybe aluminum?
I noticed a lot more heat when I swapped my steel subframe to a ali one from a 1199, so I woul say the ali subframe acts as a heatsink. Yes I noticed a improvement when I swapped to the full ti Akra system.
The cracking issue above is affecting all the bikes at some stage it seems. The Akrapovic headers do the same thing. I'd also avoid wrapping. Some improved air flow would be a better idea.
I disagree, I think that the exhaust headers cracking is due to the heat dissapation being different to the exhaust and the engine. If you check the engine temp against the exhaust temp after a ride then you wiill notice that the exhaust cools a lot faster than the engine. Exhaust wrapping is widely used in motorsport to keep the heat in the exhaust and speed up the exiting exhaust gases as well as keeping the engine temps down.
Just fitted a carbon exhaust guard, and added some extra adhesive heat mat between the carbon and steel guard, was also contemplating doing underneath of the seat !!
After a long Farthers day ride out, Air temp was in the 28 - 30 deg. i can report that the wrap works a treat!
