Just bought my first Ducati, a hypermotard 939 and I'm new to this forum. I've got a question about my chain. The bike is brand new and I picked it up last Saturday. On a little ride over the weekend a friend of mine noticed that the chain seems to look very loose. I've looked at in my garage and I'm not sure how tight/loose the chain should be. I can push the chain up at least 50mm over 200mm of chain wide, so the chain touches the swing arm completely for 200mm. I hope that makes sense!?! I've spoke to the Ducati dealership about the correct tension but I don't get much sense out of them. As the bike is only a few day old, it's probably totally fine but I was worried I could possibly do some damage if not looked at. I'd appreciate any help to put my mind at rest. Thanks, Lance
That's exactly it. Quite easy to adjust (as long as you've got the c spanner) and important too. The hyper is particularly sensitive to a slack chain. Ride gets very snatchy. I had to adjust mine over at the tt this year. I had the tools with me so was a ten minute job.
Has to measured whilst on the side stand or using a paddock stand, the measurement is different across the range too. Mine is 57-59mm (hyperstrada low version), needs adjust regular too.
Just remember that with a chain, better to be too loose than too tight. Bikes with long travel suspension need their chains to run looser than you’d find on something like a super bike.
