Maybe moot, but the indication is the slowdown is mainly due to the increased stamp duty (increasing taxes reduces the overall take). A terraced house (130m2) in the great leader Jezza's manor is an average of £1.3m which would attract a duty of up to 10% (banded) but approaching £90k on a sale. That's a lot of tax to fund on top of the purchase. Possibly Osborne intended to slow down the market when he increased the higher band rates.

I thought it was odd when he was saying sterling is lower and the top end are becoming cheaper so everyone was running away from bargains. You live and learn

Letter in the FT this week.

 

I remember the letter in the desk left by Labour for the incoming tory government.

Yep, those rascals. It's not often mentioned but in 1964 when the then tory government was leaving and labour was coming in, Reginald Maudling wrote to his Labour successor James Callaghan, "Good luck, old cock ... Sorry to leave it in such a mess."

It didn't mention money of course but they do seem to like leaving notes
