evening all. the front brakes on my ss are not to clever... My memory of my last ss is the they were great.. Mind you that was 12 years back! Compared to my monster, 748 and late 749 they are shit. Lots of lever travel before anything happens and very soft . Nearly been up the back of a few cars now.. have bleed them but no change... Are they just not very good standard and my memory is crap or is there something I should try?
Not the best nor the worst but a thorough cleaning getting rid of any crud inthe calipers and a thorough piston and seal clean do improve things. Also give ghe discs a proper clean to . And lastly change the brake fluid. Assuming all is ok with the pads?
Compared to modern stuff, probably not great. Change pads, maybe a better m/c and braided hoses If P4 copiers fit, get some, they are fantastic
If me: clean discs/bobins, bleeding banjo on master, new fluid, new pads, Hel lines, updated master, P4 caipers. (In that order).
thanks for the advice so far chaps. well, apart from birdie... ( We all know oak is for race use only)
I'm about to order some new pads. The old ones have only 2k on em but may have been contaminated by leaky fork oil from blown seals. That said brakes have been crap from since I got bike ( and before the seals went). Can I get a bango with bleed nip for the master? Does this help? What size?
Do you have braided hoses? On my 600 monster, I changed the m/c for an early blade one (iirc 13mm may have been 16mm) and it made a huge difference from the coffin type
There was nothing wrong with the front brakes on my 750SS - in fact they were bloody good. Might have been because I used EBC HH Sintered pads and used some decent brake fluid Dot4 Agip. Goodridge brake hoses too.
it must be something basic chisel as they should be as good as your Monster for starters. Lots of advice above, so sorry to muddy the waters: – braided hoses are a must, are your discs worn/scored/glazed? , do you ever remember the brakes being good or were they only ever satisfactory/poor? Could be you had naff pads in all this time.
all good stuff... It has braided lines. The brakes have been crap since I bought it but do remember my old ss as being really good. I'm going to get some new pads/ fluid/ bleed nip and give it all a good clean up. just want em a bit better before I set off to Italy. It's rideable but has scared me a few times when pushing on a bit..
Git - but I did, so. Actually I even got to make the rear brake work really well. But I never fell off it
