Ducati 848 Cranking But Not Starting

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by 848ATGATT, Jul 15, 2017.

  1. Hey all,

You lot are my last hope. My duati 848 08 plate cranks but does not start. I do hear the fuel pump prime up.

    I've done the following:
-Battery charged with slow charger (Optimax ?)
    - Replaced spark plugs with non-stock Iridium but didn't change gap (NGK CR9EIX)
-Check fuel pump to make sure the filter was not disconnected
    -Cleaned the connectors on battery

Not sure what else to try. From research, could be following:
    -Starter
    -Earth cable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. There are lots of threads on here where people have had the same problem.
How old is the battery? Just because you've charged it doesn't mean it's good. The starter takes a lot out of the battery if it's breaking down under load there will not be enough left for the ECU.
When you changed plugs were they wet? Have you checked if they are sparking

  3. It's normally the battery

  4. Welcome to the forum.
Battery sounds ok to me as it's cranking.
I see a yellow light on the dash, have you checked for error codes?
Pull a plug, rest it (don't hold it) on the cylinder head and check for a spark when you attempt to start.

  5. +2 on the battery. The starter circuit draws a lot of current and if your battery is even slightly iffy, sometimes there's not enough left to power the ignition.

  6. Welcome Dave and thread moved

  7. Try jump starting or even push starting it.
If it starts then it's your battery.
Alternatively, take the battery to your friendly local battery supplier and get them to test it for you but chances are that the battery isn't supplying enough current for both starter and ecu.

  8. Hi. Had same problem on my 848. Changed everything from leads, battery, starter solenoid. It turned out to be the brushes in the starter motor. Changed starter and fired up immediately.

  9. Cranking but not starting ??

  10. That's what he said

  11. If you have an old school car battery charger, or can borrow one, put the battery on that (remove from bike) for an hour. Bike should start effortlessly after that

  12. I have a mega one, where in London are you @848ATGATT ?

  13. I've had the battery on a OptiMate 4 and that's why I don't think that, also I got the battery less then a year ago, its an upgraded Motobatt battery. I got a voltmeter so can see actual battery stats on crank. I'm assuming it should be at least 12 something right ? Just to rule that out completely.

@Townsend6413 I'm more leaning towards what your saying, do you mean something like this:

    if so, f*k, £200 !

  14. A mega what ? but East London is where I be.

  15. One option may be a clogged fuel filter? my 1198 was fine heading down to the MOT last year and then just would not start when the MOT tester tried to start it up, but cranked over fine and the pump primed, may be worth a shot if you run out of ideas?

Turned out mine was the original filter which had been on the bike 6 years.

  16. I think Pavey was referring to his mega charger....

IMHO too much faith is vested in Optimates and other chargers of their kind and whilst they maintain a battery over winter, starting a big twin all too often proves too much of an ask. So if your bike has always started after Optimating, but now doesn't, I recommend an hour on a non'-intelligent' car charger before buggering up your sprag, or knackering your solenoid. Once the battery has the last (missing) element of charge that Optimates do not seem capable of maintaining forever, especially over a cold winter (in some, not all cases), your bike will probably fire up straight away.

It is the cheapest, simplest thing to try first

If you can borrow one something like any of these for an hour or so, you'll be riding your bike soon after....

  17. Check plugs for sparking. If they dont, whip both plugs out and try again.Just to see if reduced comp allows ignition to work.

  18. Check in tank for swirling fuel when cranking? One of tubes disconnected in tank of mine. Just needed reconnecting and clipping.

  19. Yep. That's the one. Or you can order brushes and precondition yourself if you feel up to it. I bought a recon for £80 And it's still going strong.
I wouldn't waste time doing anything else. I done it all and had exactly the same symptoms!
Bite the bullet and get the starter motor replaced. Let me know how you get on.

  20. Hearing the fuel pump at switch on only tells you that the relay and fuel pump are working. First thing is check for sparks. If there are sparks when it is cranking the fuel pump will also be running then too. If there are no sparks then odds on the crank sensor has packed up which results in no sparks, injectors, nor fuel pump while cranking. Although there is still the possibility of dodgy battery (usually slow to crank but yours sound pretty healthy) or a duff starter pulling the volts down, your's sounds healthy.
