Newbie With 899 Security Questions (not Literally)

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by MikeH, Jul 25, 2017.

  1. New to the forum and the Ducati brand so hello to everyone!
I'm the very proud owner of a 16 plate (yes 16) 899 in beautiful silk white. Since browsing the forums I'm now getting paranoid about it being lifted as there seems to be an awful lot of 899 thefts. So my obvious question is how do I protect my bike when I'm either out and about on it and when it's sitting in my garage. Apart from the Ducati immobiliser and datatag I have nothing:eek:

Off on holiday in a few weeks and want to have piece of mind that when I come back the bike will still be where I left it!

    Thanks Guys
    Mike

  2. Hi

    Have a look

    http://securityforbikes.com/security-chains.php

    For Garage

    Buy a ground anchor - 16mm - 19mm Chain and an Cen6 Padlock (Abloy 462 or Squire SS65CS)

If the bike has a hollow rear spindle - use the Antipinch Pin and a 17mm Chain and Squire SS65CS padlock

For out and about 13mm chain - longer - to go around post - or a Roadlok Disc Lock.

  3. Almax is also a good Chain too Uber 1V but Security for Bikes - does the complete set up

I have Torq Anchor, 19mm Chains and Anti Pinch Pin on Multi and Abloy padlocks / Squire Padlock for Pin.

  4. leave at a mates house or look into dry storage, some of those unit storage places allow vehicles but they have strict conditions.

  5. Hi Simon
Took your advice and went with security for bikes and have ordered the ground anchor, anti pinch pin and a big chain and lock! That should do for now, I'll worry about the out and about security when I'm back from my hols!

Does anyone have experience of biketrac? as it looks like a good system but I am a little worried as to how well hidden it is when installed as there are numerous posts saying that they have been rippped off and chucked out the back of the thieves vans. I know when tracker fitted a system on my 911 years ago they did a brilliant job hiding it but then a few years ago I had one fitted and a blind man could have found it. Don't want to go spending the money on something that is fundamentally flawed by poor fitting, thoughts?

    Many thanks for your knowledge

  6. Also, try to avoid leaving signs that you keep a bike in there. Even down to not having "46" stickers and whatnot on your car or bike paraphernalia round and about in view. Otherwise it's a breadcrumb trail... Bonkers that it's come to this, but security through obscurity isn't a bad policy.

  7. I use Biketrac, but I moved it from my old bike and have taken the time to hide it discreetly. Your only option with a dealer, would be to go with one you trust to do the job correctly. Only so many places you can fit it on a bike though and it is worrying how fast some of these frackers are being found.

If it helps, I've read more success story's than bad ones.

  8. Hefty chain through a ground anchor then park you car right up against the garage door. And welcome Dave :)

  9. I'd also look at not just securing the bike but also your garage, like drop down posts in front of the garage door (if its an up and over), alarm at all point of access and cctv belled up to your phone,,,, or even razor wire and Dobermans, but that maybe a bit extreme, At the moment I'm using the tried and tested 50 yr old menopausal wife,, cheaper than a guard dog and louder than a set of Geese roaming your property.

  10. If it's insured, why worry? :upyeah:

  11. So, we will know where he lives, what bike he's got, that he's away and what security is installed. :D

Gimme ten mins, I'll throw a hoodie on... innit.

(I'm only teasing, I'm on the map - but tactically obfuscated my exact location)

  12. Haha Fire3500 , yeah I thought that too! Talk about handing it on a plate! Think I'll have to be a little less than accurate with the dropped pin

  13. Hi and welcome Mike,

I understand your concern and being in your shoes, because ive literally just purchased 899 3 weeks ago.

Reading constant posts & videos on youtube and facebook of bikes going missing doesnt help and i myself was worried, all though the majority of this crime is London based......its gone mental in the capital!!!

    So what i did was:

She lives out of sight in my garage
Chain on rear through ground Y-anchor
    Chain on front
    Disc lock
    Garage alarmed
CCTV with motion alert to my iphone
    Mahoooosive lock on garage
Huge thick side gate with big padlock
BMW 530d M-Sport in front of garage
    And obviously immob & datatag

Also my wife works from home and can see garage from her study/work room.
