I am interested in how members would rationalize the choice This is Ducati history, about to become obsolete production; (the end of a era) the choices need not/should not be based on buy price, I think the SL, starting @ $120k AUD with a production of 500 units means the bike; to double its price would need to increase in value 120k AUD?? to $240k AUD 1974, I was offered a green frame for $2,700 AUD and they can now sell for $200k AUD about 7400% 74 times? for a SL to do that it would have to be valued @ $12OK X 74= $8880KAUD $888,000 AUD???? The FE has no plaque?, (open ended production) but is priced to be the WSB homogulation special?, or is the SL the homogulation special?? I am not sure about this; but have been offered a FE that is the same price today as my 998R was 12 years ago $ 68,000. AUD Is the FE an "R"?? told today they dont have plaques?? Criteria 1) As a practical ride 2) Investment 3) ?
there's 2 R's, I would buy the second one... FE looks pants and is an over priced trinket, the two SL's are way beyond what I would spend. I might buy an R when they bottom out if I have the money - but I think the 1098R I purchased in January was a better choice overall. It is partially investment, but is on the road and has been used more than my 2002 R1 mule this year. but a Tricolore S would also be on my list.
ok the SL just sold out/ carbon, frame, wheels, swingarm, $120 AUD that red/ white one like in your album?
"FE looks pants and is an over priced trinket" they are calling a numbered but not limited 'R' I put an order in for a FE today? delivery 3wks! the other R's you talking about? Aniversario? dont know almost anything about these Bikes is the FE more expensive than a 2017 R? 1299FE @ $68000 AUD (thought was a steal) it is the same price as I paid 2004 for a 998R but did buy another one from Hackett in 2005 for 12,000 pounds with only 700miles still got it, still diassembled?? Cookster is a Bayliss copy, (seen his album) last bit of performance from the bike is beyond me, Would be interested in the electronic assistance offered by these bikes? ill have a look on the second hand market, here and in the UK
Best bike is SL2. Best vale Mk2 R. I'd have the R...most of the SL1 to make it a great bike and an R that is eligable for racing (as they should be)
Ok lets keep it simple, Mk1 1199r,1st generation slimline fairings, large brushed ali area to top of tank, electronic Ohlins. Most people think its not worthy of the r badge. Mk 2 1199r,2nd generation wide fairings, small brushed ali area to top of tank , manual ohlins,Most people seem to think it is a real r and the one to have. Mk 1 sl 1199, ltd to 500 all numbered ,under slung exhausts with lots of magnesium, real work of art. Mk 2 sl 1299,ltd to 500 all numbered, High level exhausts with lots of carbon, with out doubt the best (twin) panigale ever made. 1199s tri colour was made for 1 year and was not made in ltd numbers, came with a few extras and was more expensive than the standard s. 1299s anniversairo ,Ltd edition,500 made all numbered,35 in the uk, paint job and extras. 1299s FE, dont know to much about these but they go better than they look. Personally i would go for the Anniversario because i have one and cannot afford a SL.
Agree with everything @simmytt says except in my mind the FE is very much an R. It has everything that makes an R an R. In particular the lightweight engine internals are really what make the R models so good. You can buy bling to make any other model look like an R but it misses the point entirely. If I wanted a track bike and couldn't afford an SL then I would get the 1199R 2nd gen that I have or the FE for sure and buy a set of race cans to get rid of the euro 4 junk. I'd love to experience the grunt of the 1299 with the lightweight internals of the FE / SL. If I was getting a road bike that I could take on track then I would choose the Anniversario as the ultimate road going Panigale as the active suspension of the S / Anniversario is much better than traditional suspension on varying road surfaces. The R bikes are only fun on the road if you are on good quality roads and riding very hard, otherwise you are better off with an S.
On your criteria, the latest SL because of the exoticness (is that a word? ) of it all. However, you'd expect it to be super exotic given the price tag, which I can't ignore. So, I'd go for................................2nd generation 'R'
Thanks, have looked the specs up In am looking for bikes on the market in Australia Australia is hot, these bikes wouldn't cook you as much as the ones with high exhausts??
Cant find any sort of 1299 R in Australia for sale? I note the FE doesnt have sand-cast crankcases; never seen an R without them? The LE is a unlimited run, numbered but unlimited, note at $68 it is more than $10K AUD more expensive in Australia than in the UK after conversion
