Thinking of going from my 1200r to a multi next year, as i am planning a few european trips. Anyone done this? has it been a good move or not?
You'll love it; the things to mull over will be the 1200/new 1260cc or the 1200 enduro with larger fuel range imho.
I've been thinking of going the other way for a while. The multi is a big bike, very capable and will do almost everything. Not sure the monster could do the longer trips in comfort, although I'm sure its a peach of an engine and feels far more fun. The multi can be quite bland IMHO. In a good way.
Had an S4 then S4RS before buying the multistrada and for the very same reason, touring. The monster isn't really up for long distance where as the multi eats the miles. Get a termi exhaust for that soulful soundtrack.
Bland?? Have you ridden the other sports tourers? One thing I honestly don't think a multi is, is bland mate. Best all rounder available for my money, I've had three and may yet have a fourth, very very good motorcycles. Buy one, you won't regret it a bit.
I went the other way, mutley to monster, and I think I know what bradders means. The mutley feels kind of civilised and less exciting than the M1200 which is just a fecking hoodlum and I love that about it. Both great bikes, similar engine but I get bigger grins out of the monster.
Just to look at things from a slightly different angle, if you really like your monster which I think you do having seen some of your other posts, why not keep it and spend a lot less on a secondhand touring bike just for Europe ? There are loads of really good options and if you enjoy the buying and selling part of the process ( which some do) you could get something different for each trip . I have an older monster which I love and is great for pretty much everything but I`m considering a touring next year and am looking at old BM boxers, Moto Guzzi Norge, ST3s, maybe even an older MS1200. Loads to consider. If you are not so sure about your current bike then that is a different matter altogether.
The Picos were full of 'tourers'. I'm sure we were having much more fun carving the canyons on a monster & a MV I have no idea what they put in those panniers unless they're camping !! 20 litre kreiga is all you need ;p. Maybe they got lost in the Waitrose car park again
All the bikes are different - and all good fun at what they are. I love my Mutli - best all round bike I have ever had - and I have probably had 20 or so. I have a scrambler too - which needs to be ridden harder - but that's also really enjoyable. Never had a Monster - always fancied one - but never had one (yet). Really you can not go wrong with a multi for what you are looking for.. It is a big bike - but handles well at low speed - so you don't notice the weight. Take one for an extended test ride...
for a late 16 early 17 multi. The 1200r is a fabulous bike but a Multi will make touring easier. Not really looking forward to go to a dealers for part ex, Would rather find someone going the other way for a swap
You may struggle to find a 2k miler and someone who wants to go the other way to a monster, may be time to bite the bullet and trade in. Try putting a for sale advert on here perhaps?
I had a Multistrada 1200S before my Monster 1200S, and as much as I love the fun on the Monster I think I may swap back at some point. The Multi just seems a bit more relevant to the sort of riding I do. I'm tall, so they fit me better, and I miss the versatility and weather protection. If you're doing sunny Sunday blasts for 50-100 miles every once in a while then a Monster will be fine. If you're looking to do more regular longer journeys then the Multi is probably more worth considering. Even as I was riding my over to the dealer to part-ex with the Monster I was in two minds, as they're such good bikes. And I really missed the heated grips when I rode in to work this morning, and it was 2 degrees, and I had an hour and 20 minutes to go!! My advice would be to go and borrow one - a decent dealer should be willing to lend you one for a couple of hours, and it should give a good flavour of what they can do.
As dukesox says, you could save on your depreciation hit and get something like this for touring - https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/triumph-sprint-st-2009-£2900-ovno.55322/ save you a fortune, and you get to have the contrasting bike conundrum (and you shouldn't lose more than a few hundred on it at the very worst over a year or two). just a thought Pete
