959 Small Tweaks

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Stef, Nov 4, 2017.

  1. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the "Silly questions of the weekend" show.
    I own a 959 (ex-demo from a dealer), and I noticed a few things:

    - the gear changes are not very smooth: especially 1-N-2, sometimes I struggle to put it in neutral (i.e. at a traffic light), and sometimes it misses gears while upshifting (using the quickshifter);
    - sometimes while using the front break there are some little vibrations;
    - I changed the exhaust for an Austin Racing (not the full system), the ECU has been remapped, but fuel consumption got slightly worse and the ride at low RPMs is slightly "choppy";
    - the handlebar grip on the throttle side doesn't seem to "grip" very well: the rubber on the inside of the grip (where it gets wider) keeps folding out.

    Here are my questions:
    - what could I ask the dealer to do about the gears? Is it a clutch problem? Chain tension? Could they have a look at the entire gears/clutch system?
    - for the vibrations: could it be just the pads? I have 3.5k miles on it (seem a bit low...)
    - is there any point in re-remapping the ECU? If so, what parameters could I adjust/tweak?
    - Any advice for some new grips, shall I replace the OEM ones, also (I know it doesn't relate to the grips) is it worth installing the throttle spacers?

    The motorbike's license is a 16, so I reckon/hope these things (especially the clutch, throttle, or whatever problems the bike might have) will be covered by warranty, am I correct?

    Sorry for this long message, I look forward to hearing from you!
    Thanks!!

  2. Get it mapped if you can.

    Get some progrips.

    Do foot exercises for getting it into neutral.

  3. I tried everything I can with my foot. Gentle, rough, delicate, aggressive, charming... I promise it's not me haha

  4. are you trying to put it in neutral before coming to the stop?

    If not I'd suggest that

  5. Yeah I did try that. And seems to be smoother if doing 2-N than 1-N

  6. Hi stef try oiling it worked for me on 899

  7. Yeah I think my 899 is the same. But I’ve not had an issue with it. It’s got a fair few miles on though (13k odd) so maybe it loosened up?

  8. The foot or the gear? :D thanks!

  9. Mine has 3.5k miles... I will ask the dealer to have a look at it anyway, if it's possible!

  10. Your chain will be too loose or worn. The standard ones are crap.

    Also your clutch will probably need bleeding which is a common thing and should be part of regular maintainable in these bikes. I bleed my clutch every 1000 miles

    The vibrations through the lever is the ABS which is very sensitive in 3

  11. Thanks for the tip about the clutch! If I had to change chain and sprockets, would you have any recommendations in terms of brands, etc? Also, I don't think the vibrations are due to the ABS, the ones I'm getting are much "softer" than the ones I get from the ABS kicking in

  14. I have renthal 520 pitch on my 899. Massive improvement over the standard garbage, lighter, looks great and not prone to corrosion if looked after. I'm just going through SSSA conversion and opted for Renthal again

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  15. the standard chain is 520 but made by regina (these also make renthal chains) and it is hopeless.

    i have AFAM chain and sprockets and theyre a lot better than the standard one which required adjusting every other ride.

    i would say the reason its struggle to go into neutral would be the clutch needs bleeding though and sloppy gear change will be a slack chain

  16. Thank you so much, guys! That's really helpful!!!! Really appreciated!

  17. Just checked, I’m on renthal sprockets and gold DID chain

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  18. for your chain and spockets anything from DID, EK, RK or AFAM will be good. AFAM do a great little chain tool for about £10 if you are oing to fit it yourself.

  19. It's unlikely I'll do it myself. I'm so clumsy I'd end up having the sprocket instead of the headlights... :D
