Drivethedeal had Golf R estates were very cheap a few weeks ago not sure it they have the same deals on just now. Are diesels not a dirty work again now? You would prob get a decent deal on a GTD at a main dealers.
As I stated, personal preference. My comments & experience is based on new cars & hence a rough second hand example is not of consideration ( plenty of leased GTI’s ragged - you need to just to outperform many performance diesels). The understated styling of the R is one of the most appealing features. Don’t have to mess or tweak owet with the R, add petrol & go.
My only Comment, is how long you plan to keep it, and what will value be in time you want to sell, so unless you are doing huge milage, do not buy a diesel, as running costs are going to soar in the next few years to even possible driving into cities etc. Tax, and Diesel prices are going up, the up side is you may get a great scrapping price in a few years if replacing with a new car, Personally Buy Petrol
The R looks like a golf match? With the Pretorias on like you have mentioned I'd say looks very similar to a CSS except it doesn't have a chavy spoiler on it. As for interior on the new facelift model it comes in a nice black colour standard. Much better lights, that beautiful virtual cockpit and upgraded radio making the CSS look fairly dated already. Plus we live in the UK so even if you put winter tyres on it still won't be putting the power down and bouncing all over the show while the R is already 2 miles down the road.
I wasn't even thinking snow! Jesus if it snows then definitely don't even think about it...I was just on about any moisture in general..you might aswell get the bus.
good point, and my thoughts would be; if it has to be a diesel, lease it, then when T.May does the dirty on us (yuk) you can hand it back. Money in diesels is too risky now.
Seems we don't like suspension or exhaust modifications on our cars but on bikes it's the norm, as long as the modifications on the golf are are not bargin basement and are carried out by a reputable dealer then no problem, the only thing is you are buying from a dealer and you will have no idea what sort of person had the car before. I personally got out of our gtd last year and swapped to a gti, bagged the last of the mk7 for a bargin price and am more than happy with it, never goes below 28mpg and 45mpg on a steady run and that is on par with our old gtd.
Been through this with Carole's eldest and the 2 biggest issues were, who did the lowering and who are you going to sell it too when you want to move on ? As has already been mentioned, if it’s not air suspension, the ride on lowered ordinary spring suspension is harsh which affects the handling of the car on anything other than billiard table smooth tarmac. The Seat Leon Cupra is a respectable alternative. Andy
I think your missing the point, you do have an idea of what sort of person had the car before, because they lowered it and changed the exhaust! I would rather buy something standard, thats still on its original tyres, so you can compare mileage to tyre wear, I know this is slightly fantasical for many used purchases, but if its like new, with a good saving, then its worth a punt. As always, if it looks right it probably is, and by viewing a few, you can soon see the differences.
There are loads to chose from so if you are in doubt just bide your time Also i wouldnt get a diesel id go for the TSI. real world economy will be the same and they dont stink or sound like a tractor and the tax will probably go up on diesels in the future.
Ive got a van and a family car for anything other than fun. Dont need 300bhp to take the kids to swimming lessons!
I put Akras and ohlins on my panigale, doesn't make me a chav.Old boy over the road from me is always tinkering with his cars his rr sport and his m3 have loads of tasteful modifications inc chips and exhausts, his cars always look and sound nice and I would not have a problem buying a car from him, now the lad next door with his seat Ibiza diesel chipped to 450bhp with the front spoiler a inch from the floor that's another thing altogether.I always run my cars standard as I just can't be arsed with the insurance hassle. Also depends on the kind of vehicle take a vw transporter for example, you are frowned upon leaving these standard, big wheels and lowered suspension are the norm, my van must be the only standard transporter in the uk.
Ok had some facts wrong It’s not lowered it’s just got the GT sports suspension as standard which is 15mm lower than a standard golf It’s got factory updated alloys and the only aftermarket add on us a full stainless exhaust Still not sure if chipped or cam belt done so those will be checked on Tuesday ! I’m not too bothered being diesel as the tax is currently £30 year and it’s a 7 year old car If he gets 3 years motoring from it then alls well Christ if I think what I was driving at his age (a 2.2 Firenza)
