The Turbo S is basically the same as the Turbo but with all (or at least nearly all) the optional extras ticked. So its a higher spec than a stock turbo. Power wise, its the same as the non S, but the "overboost" of the non S is on permanently. To explain this.. In the case of my non S 997 turbo, it has an overboost where if you floor it (in sports mode), it gives you 1.2bar boost for 10 seconds before dropping down to 1bar. The S model has this overboost permanently on rather than having the time limit. A quick & simple remap on a non-S will do the same if not more.
Bang on. I've had mine 9E'd and run 1.4bar constantly in sport and sport+. Post tune telemetry aligns me with a GT2RS and it's waaaay quick enough...
Thanks, very informative. Does the constant 1.4 bar have any negative effects, lifespan of the turbo for example?
Depends on how you drive it really. The engine in the 996 & 997 is the mezger race engine which can happily run over 1000bhp reliably. Most decent remappers will remap the car and keep it well within the porsche guidelines for the sensors etc. It also depends upon what other bits you add to the car when you tune it. In particular if you start running meth, which gives you a much lower intake temp you can run even higher boost etc.
Do the GT2RS run 1.4 bar? It will not affect the life of the turbo but generally extreme boost affects the engine reliability but if it's strong to begin with and can take the pressure then it's fine.
No. The daddy in the 997 range (power wise anyway) is the 997GT2RS (@620hp). The 997.2 turbo is pretty much lined up from a hardware point of view. It shares the same turbo's and intercoolers as the GT2RS as OE. Responsible tuners like 9E and ES Motors will leave all safety parameters and set points in place. Obviously all blown engines can have the boost increased but you have to know what you're doing so as not to endanger the engine. My own model comes with 500hp standard and the S 530hp. I'm up to circa 600 right now which is well within the limits of the PDK (dual clutch). It's fast enough right now and any future mods will be on suspension/chassis. Just bought a suspension module upgrade and it's ace!
One of my mates has a 997 running something nutty like 6-750 bhp. It's got a slosh box though so whilst it is very fast, the auto box kind of cancels it all out even if you use the paddle controls due to the gear delay.
When they were new it was quite a lot circa 25k IIRC. I couldn't stretch to an S when I got mine so I settled for the standard. And I couldn't afford a new one either btw... The S does come with some tasty goodies like PCCB brakes and centre lock wheels. A tad more poke, dynamic engine mounts etc. And most importantly, pub bragging rights! Oh yeahhhh....
Yes, the PDK definitely sharpens things up a bit in that area but you still need to drive with a positive throttle to keep the turbo's spooled up. A N/A GT3** feels much more 'connected' in that respect. More awakening of the senses too... Loved the TD in a lava orange GT3RS- if only....
How does the acceleration compare with a bike now, say your 1098R? Sorry for all the questions, i'm slowly getting back into cars again since having a Renault 5 GT Turbo 21 years ago - my last car!
Ha ha, nowt wrong with the Renault 5 GT turbo! Best mate had one and I had a 2.8 Special Capri. Thought we were fekkin ace we did! My 911 is good for the double ton plus. It's very fast. I've had measured 0-60 in 3.02 seconds. My 1098R say 60-130mph would murder it on acceleration. Bikes rock in this area. If you were to do a superbike from a standing start in a car you'd be needing >900hp! That said, I've had a joust or two with dayglo power rangers on balmy summer nights. And on a flowing twisty, I've never been beaten. I'm sure a top bike pilot would do me I've just never encountered one yet. It's good fun but very, very naughty....
They must do. Maybe a tad more. I think it's a blown version of your engine, the 3.6 Mezger. The new one is an extra blown version of mine, the 3.8 DFI with water mist and various other head upgrades. 720hp? Ooft... Yes, as long as you keep it sensible with a rich fuel map : - )
Bikes are so light that they usually dissapear on the straights but one thing that is very obvious when you go to somewhere like the Nurburgring where it's all twisties is that the cars are easily capable of going faster in the corners than the bikes (rider / driver being equal). Like with many things it's mostly pub talk though since a good rider on a 100bhp bike can easily thrash a not so good rider on a 200bhp superbike. The only place it really makes a difference is in long straights and that novelty wears off pretty quickly. It's much easier for a poor driver to go fast in a car than on a bike mind.
Ive still got a 5 GT Turbo. Had it since 1995! Heavily modified mechanically, but stockish looks. (well, except for stripped out, full cage, buckets etc.). Back then it was proper quick, didnt really come up against much else on the local roads which could touch it. Due to longer & longer commutes to work I bought a daily diesel and resided the GTT for weekend/possible track use. Its been sitting in my garage since about 2005. I did make a start at recommissioning it back in 2013 but just dont have the spare time. Ever since though id had the hankering for another turbo car. I had a 350z for a while and it just didnt tick that turbo kick in pants box. I can safely say the 997 turbo brings back all those GTT memories and im pleased I went for a turbo over the lower down models. Compared to bikes, its definitely the closest thing ive experienced. The way the power is just relentless and it keeps accelerating and accelerating until you think "hang on, id better ease up". Ive not timed it or did neck & neck tests against, say my R1, but I think the bike is still quicker. Once I get mine mapped to 650bhp in the spring time, I may think differently.
As above. It's difficult to convey just how much fun the Porsches are when used as intended and they really are built for doing exactly that. They dont look quite as sexy as the more glamourous and expensive sports cars but they are equal or above in ability and you dont get a £1000 bill everytime you take it out of the garage making you scared to actually use it.
Good lad! You're running a manual right? Who's doing the tune for you? I did a Vmax day recently purely out of curiosity. Just wondered how I would hold up against the big boys. I was quite pleased with the results. My car is number 550. There were a lot of nutty petrol heads there with laptops- remapping between runs, MS109 race fuel- then me. Here's the timing sheet below. I won't be going again, I just wanted to see what happened.
Yep manual. I will more than likely be using ES motors as they are not that far away from me. Just need to agree with them what I want as I already have a lot of the tuning bits they add as part of their packages sitting in my garage ready to fit. Im not sure id fancy doing a vmax day. Maybe its old age, but my a$$ starts twitching at 130mph in my car, let alone 200mph. Strange though, as on a bike, 130mph feels perfectly comfortable.
