I went though this process and was told not to trust an led as they need such a tiny current to light. Apparently you should always use an old fashioned incandescent bulb

Yes, that's good - but as I mentioned the fault I had was with one of the terminals in the coil plug not gripping the terminal in the coil, and hence an intermittent connection. Checking the coil wiring with a multimeter didn't show the fault, as you're pressing the probes against a different part of the terminal than the coil touches.
She lives !! Dealer found loom was bad and in particular the 6/7 or so earth leads that go into the single crimp at the earth point. Second hand loom from EBay and she is running.
