999 Timing Belts

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by chase, Mar 4, 2018.

  1. I spoke to a friend yesterday who long ago had a 916 , he told me that he once replaced his timing belts by cutting half the old belt off and then sipping the new one on part of the way before cutting the remaining part of the old belt off (after taking some tension off the old belt )
Then he claims he pushed the new belt on all the way on the pulleys and re tensioned the belt .
    Is he serious ?

  2. Only possible with one belt, the outer (horizontal I think)belt, you can't possibly do it with the inside belt.

So he hasn't done it himself but heard others talking about it who haven't done it themselves.

  3. Works on single belt motors but as Steve says, Ducatis have two

  4. Steady on there boyo, that kind of troublesome talk could kill off our old fav, the oil thread. And then what would happen?
No more theories about clinging molecules, viscosity and friction modifiers, not to mention the 45minutes it takes oil to reach the top end from a cold start: unamused:

  5. That sounds like soooo much faffing about instead of making marks etc

  6. if a job is worth doing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:upyeah:

  7. Easy enough job to simply mark up with a sharpie(preferably silver of gold if you're a pimp) and whip them off and then put the new ones on. Plenty of youtube videos, once you've done it once you'll wonder what all the fuss was about!

  8. "it's worth doing well. If it's not worth doing, give it to Creamy." That seems to be my companies Mission Statement.

  9. Ah but that's if the timing was correct to start with .
When I had the belts done at St Neots m/c's it was discovered one of the sprockets was 1 tooth out .
