Hi 1997 M900 Cold, Monster keeps cutting out even with the choke on , got it to idle after it warmed up and with some persistent throttle to stop it dying , but if you give her too much throttle she cuts , feed throttle and slip clutch it cuts , on a hill she instantly cuts if you try to put load on the engine , new plugs ,oil and oil filter , fuel filter about 100km ago any Idea's ? Fuel related ? I did notice rust sediment in the old Fuel Filter Any advise on how to approach this , test procedures? Fuel system cleaner , redex type products? Carb needs cleaning ? thanks
fuel system, including carbs would be my first port of call. sounds like fuel starvation with the hill cut-out effect you are getting. also if you try to rev, open the throttle, loads of air is sucked in, but not enough fuel then the mix gets way too lean and the bike dies. just a theory from my comfortable desk chair good luck with sorting it. Pete
If it has sat then as said, jets but in particular idle mixture screws/jets as circuits can get clogged and is a favourite. If you’ve never acted in them before then I hope they are not seized (common if bike stood etc) so proceed with caution with a well fitting straight blade screwdriver. If the two little rubber sealing plugs are stillfitted then that’s a promising sign that all is fine. The Mikuni vacuum pump is also renowned for filling up with silt and water so might be worth overhauling (very straightforward, a strip and clean is all that’s needed). Ditto for carb float bowls - a small amount of water here could give symptoms described. There is a drain facility with a tapered sealing screw but beware of over-tightening after drain as it’s common to find float bowl cracked (and weeping) as a result.
Thanks Bike is used 5-6 days a week , she was running great after I serviced her Will take a look at all of the above and see what the spark plugs look like
I just remembered She was on low fuel light so I reckon the fuel pump picked up all the crap Whats the best way to clean out the fuel system?
carb float bowls, is there a tutorial with pictures or would the workshop manual have the procedure ? Airbox off?
Take a look at Ducatisuite. I found this to be an invaluable resource when I had a 750ss and it should be even better for you as it's actually aimed at the M900 Monster
Sounds a bit like a jet blocked to me. you could try draining the float bowls and running some clean fuel through then taking the mixture screws out (in the recess of the float bowls) and blowing through the passages. Count the turns to fully in before removing the screws so that you set them back as they were. Failing this you will need to strip the carbs and clean them out. You will need new seals and gaskets. My monster had similar symptoms a few years back. I would change the fuel filter too.
Was trying to figure out issue with the monster today , fuel pump works , bleed the float bowls, full of petrol (no water) , spark plug gap needed attention , set to .65 as per manual , still choking out with throttle I could not find the little gauze filter in the fuel line where it joins the T-piece between the carbs.
Little inline filter is often missing as are two little black plugs sealing idle mixer screws, Always impressed when I buy a bike described as totally original and they are all still there.
looks like one of what should be many, sound-deadening rubber discs that come wedged between fins on barrel as std. Either that or it's a datatag disc - is it pliable or rigid?
I'd also looked for a kinked breather hose if the M900 has one. I recall similar issues on my 1198, but I'm not sure if I am dreaming as the memory is vague. Might've been my 916. Damned ageing process.
