bought in error as i thought i was getting the clutch , very good condition bought from a brakers £50 ono
Top stuff, will sort it now. Ive had a spongy front brake for ages so fingers crossed this will sort it as ive always suspected the master seals were going. Sorry mate is your paypal "Is [email protected]" or [email protected]
Yep, in every way I know how and done every trick I know. If you have any ideas I would welcome them as ive never had a problem with any of my other bikes but this one is a right pain.
Yep ive bled the thing from the top and every other way and ive done it to death frpm dry lines etc too I have rebuilt the calipers with new pistons and seals and it still isnt right. ive cable tied the lever for days and bled from the top and every time it spews a little air from the reservoir bleed nipple but ive never managed to get rid of it all so i sort of came to the conclusion that air was getting in or the seals were duff. Before I messed with it the brakes were mega but they now lack power and bite. Ive put up with this for 2years but its a war i plan on winning. Just to put things into context, last summer i rebuilt an 1998 r1 that had been highsided and the reservoir had been ripped off and it had stood for years without any fluid and covered in muck. I replaced the reservoir and bled the thing. The result? awesome sharp brakes that embarrass the ducati. Before I try the other master im going to drain the fluid again and use a brake bleeder to suck fluid from the reservoir etc so that I can fill the system with the brake pistons retracted. Pumping the lever positively pressurises the system meaning the pistons extend and this is another potential pocket for air to get trapped etc. Just another little trick to try. If both fail then its time for aftermarket masters.
Seems like you have a larger issue if you have tried all this. Unfortunately Ducati don't supply a rebuild kit due to safety issues. Wonder if Brembo have a rebuild kit? Duke
No they dont mate. These masters cannot be rebuilt im very sad to say as they are sealed units. To be honest, a bit of googling reveals that brembo stuff can be a real nightmare to bleed sometimes. Just for reference, the reservoirs are also known to leak slightly where they enter the master and ive stripped the master that john sent me for converting to standard reservoirs. I just cant make my mind up about which route im going to take with the brackets. A bit of ebaying shows the rsvr has the same masters so I might try and pinch brackets from one of those.
No problems mate. Im getting ichy feet now as I want to go for a ride There are always a few little mini projects to do so im looking forward to warmer, lighter evenings soon so i can sort it out. I cant even remember the last time i got out on it as the autumn was so wet.
i did not know you could do that can you send me a pic when you have done it as i had the same prob with my clutch m/c
yeah of course. What is it you are unsure of, fitting remote reservoirs or pinching bits from other bikes? Im always looking at ktm' s and aprilias for spares as you can get brembo spares through their dealer network etc. Heres a link to the sort of thing im planning if you havent seen the thread.... http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f2/749-999-brake-fluid-reservoir-how-fit-remote-one-3132/
I have this option but I want to find out if its just hard to bleed or a dodgy master. It was spot-on before I swapped the fluid out 2 years ago and im sure its that air is just getting in or a hard to shift bubble. When I changed the fluid originally I did wonder if the fact the fluid had never been changed and was black sludge had resulted in damage to the seals etc. Probably dodgy masters on both counts. Personally Im disgusted that these parts are not rebuildable and we all know how much of a pain it is even getting seals for calipers.
Right, bit of an update. I had stripped the master I received from motoJohn with the view of replacing the reservoirs with remote jobbys but seeing as it was warm enough to play with the bike for an hour I thought I would drop the master off for a look too. Just to recap: When I bought the bike the fluid was black and had obviously never been touched. As soon as I replaced the fluid the brakes were crap and I had all sorts of glazing issues with the pads etc. I have since rebuilt the calipers and changed the pads etc but still they were crap and the lever lacks firmness. I had noticed a slight drip from the bottom of the reservoir but I had always thought this was probably just a bit of water from having washed it down etc. So today i took it off and this is what I found.... View attachment 10739 You can just about make out a small droplet of what im 100% sure is brake fluid where the reservoir goes into the master. So apart it comes.... View attachment 10740 You can make out quite a bit of fluid here so out comes the inlet rubber to find a big lump of solid brake fluid and corrosion. View attachment 10741 I will bet a pint that what is happening is when the system is under pressure it is leaking a tiny bit of air in through this inlet which would explain why I never seem to be able to get all of the air out from the top. The master I received from John was the same but no where near as bad and its quite easy to imagine how corrosion against the inlet rubber could cause gremlins. I took a thin strip of wet and dry and lightly flatted the internal bore to smooth out the corrosion and this will be getting a thin smear of brembo brake grease. I have ordered new inlets from moto-racing as the originals have small indentations from the build-up and its not worth risking re-using them as they would probably leak. What do you think? Worth a punt at about 4 quid for the inlet and im betting it will sort it. If it does, I have a spare master so thats not too bad. I will update this when I get the parts and fit them next week if I get the time but as two people on here seem to be having the same problem with their clutch it might be worth having a look to see if you have the same issue first. JC
Update: Well I re-mounted the reservoir and bled it up and it was still soft as hell so tried the other master. result? soft as hell and im starting to think im going mad. btw ive been spannering my own bikes messing with brakes for over ten years so its not that I dont know what im doing..... i think. So today I had a package from jhp land on the mat with some remote reservoirs so on went a set of 848 masters and..... fixed. Lever is good and firm and has instant bite. seeing as they have been crap for a few years and only two pistons popped out at once its going to be a big difference. I cant wait to test it out. Stoppies here I come!!! I was upset after spending a mint rebuilding the calipers with new pistons and seals last year and ive changed the pads more times than ive changed girlfriends but lesson learned. oh and the remote reservoirs look so good. makes the res look shocking.
