Change 848 Belts Or Not?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by did, Jan 13, 2015.

  1. Hi all
I have recently bought 848 and the belts where changed nearly 2 years ago, the bike has done approx 1500 miles since then. Ive inspected the belts and they look as new, what do you guys think, do I change them or wait until I put a few more miles on it???
    Thanks

  2. I thought 848/1098 had longer belt change intervals then 2yrs.

  3. Looking in the book if Im not mistaken it states 2yrs, but looking at the belts they look almost new.

  4. Are you a gambling man?
    Thats really the question.
Personally im not so i changed my 848 ones every 2 years even if low mileage.

  5. ^ that's what Ducati recommends. Although there are many on here who have gone for longer without changing. Best read through and draw your own conclusions. :)

  6. change them is really worth the risk.

  7. Thanks bettes, very interesting reading.
I knew this would be a subjective topic so, Im going to leave the belt change for a little longer. ;)

  8. Gamble eh?You arent as paraniod as me then.

  9. The 848/1098/1198 say 2 yrs the Diaval and Multi I believe say 5 years. My 1098 went 3 years and the belts looked new when they came off. People will say ah you don't know what they were like inside. Personally having read a lot of features on Ducati belts and changed a lot of still serviceable belts I think they will last a lot longer than Ducati say

  10. There are lots of factors which can affect whether you'll be fine for 1000s of miles or whether they'll snap under the first bit of load they're put under.
Look at how much new belts and a bit of time would cost. Now price up new valves, valve guides, oil seals, top end gasket set, possible piston, rockers and cylinder head along with a days labour plus the belts anyway. If the price difference doesn't make you flinch leave the belts on forever.

  11. 848 is two years. The 848 Streetfighter is 5 years due to it having the 11 degree cam timing ala Multi 1200 and Diavel.
Personally I'd change at two years, it's "cheap insurance" as mentioned. It's one rule I swear by with my customers and my own bikes. They do break, again for all sorts of reasons, maybe not as soon as the two year rule would have you believe, but the consequences of a failure can be catastrophic. If fitted by a dealer and if Ducati belts are used then there's the parts warranty that goes with that to ;)
The topic has been done to death over the years, and each owner can make their own call/judgement on the subject. I see at least one failure, maybe 2 or three a year, and it's not always poor fitment...

  12. I don't know much but I do know to listen to Nelly. He does not say much so when he does take note.

I've also heard that poor fitment is a big issue with these. When its service time I'm going to be leaving the belts, cams and rocker heads to the professionals and do the rest myself.

  13. Wemoto are selling belts - brand name Dayco. £13.20. Sounds to cheap to be true. Does anyone have any experience of these.

  15. Wouldn’t touch Dayco with a barge pole. Not seen many, but those I have looked pretty worn out after a very short mileage, almost to the point of failure

  16. I have recently had feedback from an independent (ex Main Dealer Tech) who says when he turns OEM Belts inside out after two years and squeezes them you can see micro cracks, and when he has just started changing California Cycleworks belts after the same period from customer supplied belts they as good as new - but I can't substantiate what he witnessed. Nelly would know better re OEM belts.
In 9 years of CCW launching there belts we still don't know of any engine failures due to the belts themselves failing and they are considered the No1 belt in the USA :)

  17. Thanks Nelly, I fitted CCW belts myself last time. I'll go with them again.
