1299 Blade To 1299

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Mike4702, Apr 17, 2018.

  1. Hi all,

    Just come from a 2008 blade (after 9 years) to a 1299...

A few questions if I may please?

    1. Where do I get 1299 remapped in the UK? It's a bag of spanner below 4K :)

    2. I am 15 stone... the suspension feels hard and runs wide.... is this normal?

    3. What tire choices do we have? It seems the rear is an unusual size, so the choice is limited.

    Many thanks for your help.

Chris at CJS racing, Wilf at MotoRapido spring to mind.

The Panigale take a bit of getting used to before you work out how to get the best out of them. They understeer a little compared to the Blade. At 15 stone the springs are more likely too soft than too hard. It's just the feeling of the bike and the stiff monocoque frame. Getting a good base setting on the bike for your weight will definitely help with all this, or possibly springs but unless you are going hard you are probably ok on the stock ones.

Plenty of tyre choice but the usual for the street is the supplied Pirelli SP 200 width. I run Dunlop KR 195 rear slicks on track and I think they do a GP cut slick equivelent for the road? I'd also highly recommend the Metzeller M7RR if you want something more versatile for the road thats better in the wet but also just about as good on track.

  3. 1. Easy, don’t ride in a gear where your speed requires less than 4000 revs. That is a serious comment. You can get a remap from a number of places, especially if you remove the exhaust system valve. If you do a search on the forum, it should pickup on the same question already asked.
    2. £60 or £70 quid spent on a professional suspension set up is well worth it. If you are under steering under acceleration out of the bend, I’d suggest you look at your pre load and compression.
    3. IIRC you can change the tyre size in the settings.
Take your time with the 1299, it won’t be as predictable as the CBR and will scare the crap out of you when it gets lairey but it will be a hugely rewarding bike when you get it right. Andy

  4. Thanks all... very helpful... last question... how long does it take to trust the elctroics... can u really pin it and let it sort it' self out?? I was feathering the front in 4th over the weekend in sport... didn' have the nerve to pin it in a lower gear...

  5. Hi, welcome.

    Don't talk about Blade's round me! :cold_sweat::bomb::poop:

  6. Welcome mike:upyeah:

  7. I had a blade and it was shit below 4K rpm as the airbox flaps stay shut until past 4000rpm and the map was very lean

The panigale is smoother than the blade was low down.

  8. I have read good things about a remap... 213 bhp as well... does anyone pin it in first and let the electronics save u ?

  9. i was on the very edge of the supercorsa at Donington last year, my toe slider was hitting the track. the bike did not flinch its a beauty on tracks like this. long as you have grippey tires it wont let you down m8.

  10. 213hp is optimistic on a standard motor. We have recently worked on a couple of motors for customers and 190+ is more realistic. The electronics on the 1299 are as sophisticated as they come for the price, the 1299SL/R/FE are better but more expensive models. Andy

  11. Hi

I only tend to ride the road... 190 at the wheel... that' 215 at crank ???

  12. I’d need to ask the workshop for the detail instead of the overview I got, sorry. Andy

  13. Be interested to know ;-)

  14. As already posted, keep the revs up and it's fine.
I had a Blade and changed for the Panigale.....not a day goes by were I don't think that was the best decision Ive ever made. Did 1500 miles in 3 years on the blade and did that in 3 weeks on the Pani. So much more fun/passion/drama on the Pani, it just makes you want to go out and ride.
For what it's worth, mine gave 209 BHP at the back wheel on the dyno with full race Akrapovic and custom map.

  15. 209 at the back wheel... that' about (15%) 240 at the crank???

Yes I did buy the duc to light a flame so to speak... No drama with the blade

  16. It made 228 at the crank.

All dyno’s are different of course, so the figure can’t really be compared to a figure from a different dyno. They should all be calibrated the same of course but they’re rarely checked and/or recalibrated as far as I can tell. People tend to jump down your throat on here when you quote a figure. All I can say is that before my map, mine was peaking around the 180 mark.

Yep the Pani certainly gets the juices flowing! The best quote I got on it was from the dealer before I bought my first 1199. “After a mile in a built up area, you’ll want to burn it. After a mile on the open road, you’ll want to marry it!”

  17. The 1299 is never going to be super smooth below 4K revs, especially on standard exhausts. With aftermarket pipes a remap will enable them to disable the O2 sensors which lean the mix and make the bike hunt a bit but compared to a Fireblade it's always likely to have 'character'....

Depends where you are based in terms of remap. Down south you are looking at CJS/Moto Rapido to name just a few, they are all good.

  18. Thanks for all your help/advice.

    Suspension set up tomorrow :)

  19. Best bit of the 1299 it uses far less oil than my blade did. The blade was like a two stroke with the amount of engine oil that thing burnt.

  20. Yes my blade use to burn the old oil... lucky it went for a clutch recall at a 1000 miles else I would have cooked the engine if they hadnt' noticed... blade friendly... 1299 animal... me thinks... ride it hard or run to mummy
