I had 796 and I seem to remember it being quite a way over whilst on the side stand. They've got a long stand stem but it locks out in quite a forward location on pivot.
Hmmmm still not convinced...sounds like a bodge....the stand should bolt to the crankcase....take some pics...
I'm guessing it's been crashed on its left hand side at some point hence the welding of the components + the missing handguards, pillion peg and wonky indicator.
