848 rear wheel sockets

  1. I'm on the look out for a good quality socket for the wheel nuts on my 848 and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for good quality ones.
I'm in no desperate hurry as I've now need to take the wheels of right now but you never know when I may need to:rolleyes:

  2. they are the same as the 748 ones if it helps...........i do have a pair of sockets for rear wheel and sprocket hub.......where are you in uk

  3. I use a standard 3/4 drive bi-hex socket on mine, with no problems.

Some people say they machine the lead-in off the start of a socket to get it more grip on the nut.....mines not.

I wouldn't fancy the blingie aluminium ones tho, they look like they would melt on sight of a tight nut.

  4. That's useful to know Anth, I had my eye on an Oberon one on ebay but just missed out as I wasn't going to pay silly money.

I wouldn't be surprised if I already had one in my tool box considering I spent a fortune on tools when I was working as technician on cars for 10 years or so but haven't got round to checking yet.
Does anyone know what size it is of the top of their head to save me having to go and measure or look it up?
As I say, I don't have a need for it right now but there's nothing worse than going to do a job and finding that you don't have the tools.

  5. 46mm and 42mm.....I think, off the top of my head :upyeah:

  6. cheers, I'll have a look in the tool box next time I head to the garage but from memory I think the biggest I have may be 36mm so may end up buying one:frown:

  7. Oops......

Its 46mm and 41 mm for the other......be careful with the torque figures too, most people use the 1098 figure which is too high for the 848

  8. 186lb rear from memory on 848 which I thnk is same as 9** wheres the 1*98 is something like 210!

  9. Get an impact scoket from Halford and grind the face flat so its got more grip

  10. mine are 3/4 drive bi hex......i dont need them anymore.....

  11. It's 176Nm which is 130ft-lbs in old money......

230nm is the 1098, don't trust what the book says either, trust what is cast into the wheel itself.

  12. They'd be the fella's Tel.....

  13. Oops mixed my units! My torq wrench set up and never changes so never check... :)

  14. If you're looking to offload them Andy then let me know how much you want for them and we'll see if we can sort something out.

  15. guys - you are correct - it's a 46mm. However, my manual and I think rear wheel both say 230nM - which I know off the top of my head on the grounds of how many times I have changed tyres.

Mine has been done at 230nM for every wheelchange now - as that's what it said in the book!

  16. did you say where abouts you are? i dont need them any more so.....you would also need a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer too......

Im only just a couple of miles north of milton keynes Tel if you wanna collect......

  17. Like I said in the earlier post the book is wrong, the figure is on your wheel.

  18. 230Nm is defo too much on the 46mm nut. That's for the 55mm nut on 1098, MYS1200, Diavel etc.
848, 748, 996 etc. are 176Nm wheel side and 141Nm on the 41mm sprocket side.

Just an aside Bradders.....unless the wrench is a preset rather than an adjustable wrench, leaving it wound up will wreck the calibration. Always best to wind the adjustment right off a torque wrench when not using it. It'll serve you better for much onager without needing to calibrate regularly.

  19. Thats 1098 large axle, not 848 small one (stand to be corrected)

  20. Didnt know that, guess I'll be unwinding it tomorrow! As another aside, you also camt go wrong with a 12v impact tool to get the bugger off!
