Dent in the 696 frame

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by leg, Jan 29, 2013.

  1. Hello guys, i'm really excited to join Ducati community, this friday i'm going to buy a 696 Monster (2011). So, one small question before buying. In overall, motorcycle looks very good, but there is a small dent in the frame. Đ¢here will no problem with fixing this visually, but what about safety? Would be those works be enough or there will be need to reweld this frame? Here is the picture of that dent:

    Thanks!

  2. Looks to me like it's been down the road and the bottom yoke/fork leg has bent the frame. I would want it checked out to be true before I even considered the repair. I would expect in the insurance eyes they'd write this off.

  3. I'd walk away.....that's had a good thump from the fork leg or lower yoke. That would probably be enough to write the bike off if inspected for insurance. The front geometry could be/will be out...Have you HPi'd the bike for insurance records? If it's not recorded, then it's been probably been patched up.
The bars would've certainly hit the tank cover. The lock stops will be damaged, probably bent as well.

  4. Thats not a small dent

  5. Thanks for quick answer. This motorcycle is "as is", no (cosmetic) repair is done, so there is no insurance records. Buying it from a certified dealer (shop), not from random guy. Geometry looks good too. Here is more photos:

  6. How did the dent happen?

  7. Walk away, it needs a new frame. Think along the lines of it folding as you brake - not pretty and potential lethal. That should be written off and scrapped.

  8. I don't have any idea, the bike was imported from Spain, seller doesn't have any records.

What a shame, i collected all the money, agreed about the delivery, but it's better to know now, not in the hospital. So there is no option with this?

  9. I know it may be tough but walk away. (Whilst you can)

  10. There are options but the value of the bike will drop significantly I feel. It can be cut out and replaced, or skinned over and and welded. Whatever, the geometry needs checking prior to any use and the welding /repair done buy a competent frame builder/engineer. A lot of the DD race bikes with similar frames develop cracks in the from tube on the upper rail just before the headstock. They are welded and braced, but these are race bikes. Unless the cost is significantly lower than a similar UK model with no damage I would walk away. Other than that it looks a decent bike, bummer to find a fault like this. Remember, its damaged (more likely a frame write off) and purchase price should reflect this.

  11. Look at the brake line just ahead of the large dent in the frame, it looks like there's a kink in it where it was probably pinched against the frame by the wallop - brake hard and you could be surprised by the fact that the bike doesn't stop.....

Walk away while you still can

  12. Is that a weld/repair half way down the diagonal tube?

  13. Motorcycle has only 1915km. So now i'm thinking, that it was sold because of dent and there may be more (invisible) damage. My first thoughts was - "Looks perfect, dent can be skinned and welded after season", but if a frame write off, there is no any option.

Sadly, but but will have to.

Anyway, thanks guys! You saved not only my wallet here.

  14. Good call. If the insurance company were involved that would have most likely been a category B write off due to frame damage. Looks like someone has repaired it themselves to avoid a claim.

  15. Yeah, the dealer said that there is no service history on this bike. But from shop, i excepted more respect.

  16. It's also missing the screen and mirrors. If its imported, it won't show up on UK insurance. You can see the lock stop in one of the pictures and its visibly bent and started to rust.
tbh, it ain't worth 2 grand never mind 4k plus....

  17. Hmmm. Is this an offical Ducati dealer? 'no records' sounds like someone is being very careful with the language they are using. A bit like Clinton and his definition of sex.

  18. he's in Lithuania, the bike is from Italy so I doubt that it would be a Cat anything!

  19. It was imported from Spain, through Switzerland to Poland. From first sight it looks very good bike, especially for a newbie, like me. So i'm very glad that found this forum.

Sorry, not a official Ducati dealer, just a motorcycle shop (Prymus-D - MOTOCYKLE - Quady - Prezenty - Upominki - AGD). By 'no record' i meant, that there is no service history.
