1200 DVT Daft Question No. 25

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by BigAlan, Jul 31, 2018.

  1. So after the next service has been done by OYB I intend to do regular oil and filter changes myself as I have done on other bikes, so is the oil drain and filter underneath the sump guard and easy access once it’s removed?

    Where is the air filter?

Lastly what’s that square black thing on the left hand side behind the horn?

Oh not quite lastly, anything else I should change regularly or look at, I already rotate the brake bobbins weekly as it is.

    Thanks.

  2. I’ll have some of whatever your on.

  3. I just changed the oil on my 2015 for the first time myself last night. Nine screws to remove the belly pan. The really small screws on the very bottom don't need to be removed and I recommend not removing them, otherwise the belly pan comes off in three pieces and then it's a pain to deal with.

So the belly pan can be removed as one piece then the drain plug and the oil filter are right there, full and easy access. The oil filter is up against the oil pan so you don't have a full 360 degree access but it was more than enough for my filter wrench and my hand to remove the filter.

The bottom of the engine has a flat plate on it, held on by four screws, behind which is a wire mesh oil filter. I haven't seen this before and I chose not to pull it out but my service manual recommended cleaning it after every second oil change, owners manual says clean it after the first 1000 km then never again. Maybe someone else can chime in on what they do with this thing, but the manual just said to use compressed air to clean it out. Maybe it's not a big deal.

Drain plug used a 5mm hex driver, I believe, and the torque was 20 Nm. The specified torque for the oil filer was 11 Nm but since I don't have the socket-driven tool for it, I just tightened until the seal was compressed a bit (snug and then approx. half a turn).

I then put in 3.6 litres of oil, service manual said it should have taken 4.1 litres.

  4. Pull the mesh oil filter out after every 2nd oil change. Dealers will likely do this with the desmo service.
It is just a large mesh tube with O rings at either end. You can wipe it over, wash it out using petrol, whatever suits. Then blow / wipe it off and refit it.
Your cleaning it for no other reason than to check if there is anything of concern, it is so big it is highly unlikely to be blocked.

Earlier bikes just used engine sealer for the bottom plate, but there is now a gasket for it, makes the job a whole lot easier.
It is suggested the copper washer on the drain plug is changed too, certainly worth doing every 2nd fill. Either that or re-aneal it with a blow torch.

  5. Thanks guys, happier than I was before.

Air filter, has to be hidden somewhere, plus what’s that black square thing by the horn?

  6. The engine air filter is under the gas tank. ChrisE, a member of ducati.ms put together a great video showing how to install the body panels. You can follow that for the removal. Then it's just a couple screws holding on the tank and a few connectors for fuel pump, fuel sensor and bluetooth if you've got.

The black square thing is the EVAP canister. There's info on this site and ducati.ms on how to remove that, what you have to plug, etc.
