Hi Guys, A long time since my last post, hope everyone is enjoying the British summer! As per the title, my rectifier regulator got that hot it burnt right through the seat tray and popped out the bottom this morning! What options do i have in terms of the rectifier/regulator and how do i go about the new hole its made? I presume it's happened to many owners here already.
For the record, that plastic tray is part number 82916732A and called Elect.System Chamber Mudflap. That's on order along with a new and improved MOSFET Rectifier. If anyone is still running this old R/R i would strongly recommend changing that out right now. Piles of smoke coming from the tail isn't a fun thing to see, it could have easily caught fire.
Get a new tray, and rectifier, cut a rectifier shaped hole in tray and then install upside down so the fins are dangling in the fresh air I was recommended this by a knowledgeable dealer and it did the trick for me Will upload pic laters...
It's Ricks Motorsport 10-009h MOSFET. You can plug it in with the same connectors, i believe it's also the same spacing so you don't need to mess around with an adaptor. I'll let you know once it arrives.
Just to confirm, this part is 100% plug and play and the bike is running good. I've checked all the voltages, and we are spot on. I went for a ride in some heavy traffic city riding and this rectifier runs cool. You can touch this thing with your hand it runs that cool. If anyone is interested i have a regular rectifier for sale, i purchased this to get me home, PM me.
Hi just bought my 996S last Friday - 2001 model. Took it out Tuesday for first ride love it but... ... went to start it Wednesday battery flat! New optimiser purchased and started easily this morning. Took it for ride this afternoon got held up in some slow moving traffic and it started to misfire and stalled. Called breakdown -while waiting it started again but only managed 100 yards before misfiring and stalling again. Home now and I’ve been Googling like crazy and it seems that this is a regulator problem caused by overheating/poor airflow due to the position inside the fairing? Probably compounded by slow traffic route? Can anyone confirm please is it simply a matter of swapping the regulator OR are there other bits that may be damaged (stator wherever that is). Is it easy (relatively) to move it back onto the rear number plate as I’be seen that is a cool (temperature) place to fit it. Any tips! Not an ace mechanic but want it fixed and not many Duke experts in Devon to my knowledge - anyone know anybody this way?
A properly fitted Shindengen Mosfet regulator fitted in its original position should be fine, it isn't a big job to move it to the rear number plate as I did, but probably overkill. Steve
Many thanks for that Steve, so hopefully no other items that would need changing then? Is the Shindengen the one mentioned in this thread (10-009h from Rick’s Motorsport)? What do you’re mean by properly fitted - wiring changes etc. or is it “plug and play”, a one for one swap? I can see the benefit of putting it back there for the additional air flow.
Properly fitted, all connections are clean and tight, some will solder all connections to avoid any poor fitting otherwise they can get very hot and melt.
This 10-009h from Rick’s Motorsport is a MOSFET version, and it can stay in the original position. It's a simple plug and play, absolutely nothing to change or worry about. The only reason you would relocate it, is if you wanted the space to put your battery under the seat. Since changing it I've had some very heavy traffic situations in blazing heat (For the UK), and it doesn't even get remotely hot. Are you sure it is your regulator that's the problem though? Can you see any burnt wires?
He's got a 996 the reg rec is inside the fairing down near the front exhaust manifold with little air flow, they can get hot.
