Danny Bakers greatest album thingy

  1. For the last three nights on BBC4 at 9.00 has been Danny Baker and assorted guests eulogising the greatest rock, pop, and R&B album of the last 5 or so decades. Compulsive viewing if you're a vinyl junkie like me, the first one even had everybodies favourite hate figure Jeremy Clarkson to offer his considerable opinions.

This got me thinking. What are my favourite three rock albums of all time and why??

So here goes, as Danny Baker explained there are no right or wrong answers just the ones that mean something to you.

    In no particular order.

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Epic album, Gabriels Dark Side of the Moon - Sublime

Nirvana - Nevermind - The first time I heard this I said out loud, "What the fuck is this?" Love every moment of it.

AC/DC - Back in Black/Highway to Hell - Sexist garbage but for me an introduction to the world of not giving a shit and saying fuck you to the man. Nuff said.

So come on, lets have yours ...

Series available on iplayer for those that missed it

BBC iPlayer - Danny Baker's Great Album Showdown: File under: Rock

  2. First one is very easy, The Strangers - Rattus. The greatest album ever IMHO ;-)

I'm not sure I can choose two more though? Back in Black and Highway to Hell would both be up there, Blondie, Parallel lines, Floyd, Dark side of the moon, Nirvana, even the Happy Mondays and Faithless would be bands that make my list, it just depends on my mood!

  4. i cant list my fave albums as there are too many, and too many that ive yet to hear..however i will say this...the programme itself has been brilliant..finally, an intelligent discussion about real artists and real music, whatever the genre. danny baker is also well informed about his subject and this is a great vehicle for him...shame hardly anyone will bother to watch it..i also have to agree with the general concensus on the show that from the mid 60's to the mid 70's was generally the golden era of the album..there are some great works before and after this period, but there were so many incredible records made during this period that its totally indicative of the state music writing and the digital age in general that these artists and albums are all but ignored.

  5. Disintegration The Cure

Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd

    Strange Times The Chameleons

  6. I watched the Rock, Pop and R&B eps, which I found to be very enjoyable indeed.

  7. No order:

    Physical Graffiti

    Electric Ladyland

    Goodbye

  8. So many albums and very hard to pick out a top 3, but Bowie, The Man Who Sold The World, is up there, REM, Green maybe and Floyd, Piper at the Gates of Dawn/Saucerful of Secrets, issued as a double album so I'm counting it as 1 as I can't choose between them.

All early albums by bands that became mega, I have a theory that a bands first albums are the most creative and inspired.

  9. Floyd-Wish you were here.Mike Oldfield-Tubular Bells.I cant make my mind up for the third.

  10. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of life
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Glen Campbell - Ghost on the Canvas

    An eclectic mix

  11. Todays addition to my top three, Pink Floyd - Wish you were here.

  12. +1 - defo one of my faves.

There are so many albums I love - so difficult to pick three. Every one mentioned so far is a goody. No-one has mentioned Pet Sounds yet ... one of THE greats IMHO.

  13. Well coming up with a dozen of good ones is simple. But top 3? Very very tricky. I'll have to give it some thought.

All I know is that Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division is one of them.

  15. In no particular order:-

Pearl Jam - Ten, reminds me of my first trip and so far only trip to the US. A place which fascinates me.

Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (all 3 acts), I just dig it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way, evocative of 'the one who got away'

  16. Oh yes, I have seriously considered By The Way. But I think it's going to lose out to Stadium Arcadium - a crap name, a crappier sleeve but a fabulous album (and it's twice as long).

  17. That's a tough one and i'd probably never give the same three twice with time to ponder.

    N.E.R.D. - In Search Of...

Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show

Devin The Dude - The Dude
