Mot Stuff That Ive Learned....

  1. Not anymore apparently - if the cover is on the pillion part of the seat and no pillion footpegs are on the bike, it should be deemed to be a solo seat and the tester should know that.

    Here it is:

    6.2.6 Pillion seat
This inspection doesn't include sidecar seats.
If there is an optional cowl replacing or covering the pillion seat at the time of test, you should consider it to be a single seat motorcycle.

    6.2.12 Footrests
Single seat motorcycles don't need pillion footrests. If there's an optional cowl replacing or covering the pillion seat at the time of test, you should consider it to be a single seat motorcycle.

All the new rules are here:

  2. Here's another little quirk of the new rules that a garage explained to me ...

They have to check brake fluid for contamination ..... but, they are not allowed to remove any parts / covers etc to complete the MOT, as such, they can not remove the brake fluid reservoir cap. so the check for contamination of the brake fluid, is visual through the reservoir.

What a waste a visual check will be, unless the fluid is black.

  4. Yup or fit a Rizoma that only have these ridiculously small site glasses that let you see shit ;)

  5. Shame really as that could be a useful thing. I would expect most people would rather know if their brakes might fail, so they can do something about it.

  6. Suppose but brake fluid has to be REALLY bad before it stops working & I'll bet you'll get a fail from over zealous testers with dark fluid

  7. My Mot guy told me that number plate size is discretionary. Had to do my Monster at the Bath Council Mot place last year and they did not comment on number plate. Weird thing was that the Bath place did not like the rear reflector. It's the Italian flag and the red bit was not in the exact centre-line of the bike. I think that he relented when he saw my facial reaction. I junked my Monster pillion footrests years ago and nobody has ever commented. The seat is non standard and would not be much of a pillion seat TBF, but then a lot of modern Jap bikes just have a little patch of seat that make it more of a fairground ride.

  8. No. They didn't mention boarder round the edge...

  9. Thanks. What would you think that rule means?

  10. No idea but ive always been told by previous and various MOT testers that theyre more interested in the letter size and the spacing. @Birdie - the fork seal buddy worked so that sorted the leak out but, its the second time ive had to do it in the last 18 months so, does that mean the seal is knacked or, is that a normal thing....assuming i get it through the MOT i was half considering stripping the fork anyway as ive got a spare seal...

  11. I also went off to check the MOT rules, and found the registration plate odd.... so no border means no need for the BS EN number??!

Also, as my car has an ABS light omen, I thought I’d check that and couldn’t easily spot if its in, or out, of fail. Engine light is (?!) and some others but not ABS. Any ideas anyone? @cookster ?

  12. I agree the wording doesn't make any sense to me.

  13. I have a private plate on my wife’s car, and will be one going on mine, and neither have borders. Plain plate, right font, size, lettering, spacing (almost ;) ). Ridiculous if it were to fail becaue it doesn’t have a dealer name in there

  14. When is your next MOT?

  15. wife’s car is next year, it’s just 2 yrs old now, 911 is Oct. Gixer is probably 2020 when I finally get my shit together and sort it lol

  16. Well you will have to let us know if your 911 fails on the plate. I'm not certain whether the rules have changed or perhaps ComfySofa was unlucky and had a tester who is picky.

  17. @bradders, if the engine management light is on or doesnt iluminate and go off it now fails, if the abs light is on or doesnt iluminate and go off it fails.
