Anybody Play Bass? I tried too once, but the flippers kept getting in the way and the sound was terrible
Yes and no! It's the way with musical instruments, you never stop learning, come to think of it like life itself really! Currently learning loads of Connor Oburst tunes, suits my methodology!
I play bass. Have done for over 30 years. Still not great at it, but good enough to get by. It is good fun. I find it easier than paying guitar, I think far less about what I am playing. I find it very natural to play, although I am probably slightly better technically at the guitar. I play in three bands, FOCS, Taller Than Jane, Monarchy: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=526949031108571 https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=506976212832436 Is that enough self promotion?
My main bass is a Sterling by Music Man Ray5. It is very similar to a Music Man Stingray 5, but is made in Indonesia and therefore a lot cheaper. When I bought it I did play it back to back with a Music Man and the difference was subtle and not something that I felt justified the price difference. For the Queen band my main bass is a custom built copy of John Deacon’s 67/68 Fender Precision (his main bass from 1976 to 1985). It was made for me by Eternal Guitars using a stock Japanese made licensed Fender body and neck from AllParts. It was actually cheaper than buying a new or used USA Fender and stripping the finish. My other Deacon bass is a Sterling by Music Man Ray 34 CA which has been made to look like John’s 1977 Music Man Stingray. For the Queen band I use a Hartke HA3500 into an Ampeg SVT 410HLF. Not what Mr Deacon used, but as he favoured a fairly neutral bass sound I don’t think it’s essential for me to copy his bass rig to achieve his sound, although I have toyed with getting a custom built amp based on the Alembic F-2B pre amp that Deacon used. My normal live bass rig is a Hartke TX600 and one or two TC electronic BC212 cabs, although I will sometimes use an Eden EX410 cab and/or the Hartke HA3500 head. At some point in the near future I will probably move to using a Laney Nexus SLS head and N410 cab.
Yep, here's my favourite bass, a 5 string fretless made by a kiwi player called Peter Stroud. Made from ash and loaded with a very growly active Bartolini and tone controls.
I played cornet in a brass band when I was younger, in fact my hole family played instruments . Steve
