748rs

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by cookster, Mar 3, 2013.

  1. hi guys, recently came across a 748rs on you tube and did a bit reviewing, seem to very rare indeed! does any one know how may were made? and if any one has one for sale id love to get my hands on one!!

  2. I assume your after a track bike ? Or is this for a collection. Indeed they are rare but also an expensive bike in terms of maintenance if it were to be tracked.

  3. wouldnt want to track it as you said to much to keep rebuilding it, be nice to have one though.

  4. Or build your own variant. Base SPS with he extra bits but keeping a little more reliability...maybe

  5. Moved to Superbike

  6. Hello

    I had a 748RS.

They are really nice bikes, lots a carbon and special parts.

Unless you are really proficient in engine maintenance, do as Bradders says, get an SPS or get a 748RS and stick a well built 996 motor in.

  7. I too have been looking at the 748RS's I have found a couple for sale but I'm not to sure on the spec's as I only thought ducati made them in 2000 & 2001 but I have seen one that is said to be 1999.

in my opinion if you want a easy to maintain 748 go for the SPS or R but don't wreck a RS by putting a different engine in it.

  8. They are a bit special, don't think they are suitable for road or for the living room. Made for the track and that is where it should be.

  9. In Falloon's Standard catalogue he lists 748Racing as follows. 748Racing MY1998 20 built in 1997, 748 Racing MY1999 17 built in 1998 and 1 in 1999.
For 2000 and then 2001 he states the bike was upgraded to the higher spec 748RS and lists them as: 748Racing MY2000 37 built in 1999 and 15 built in 2000, then 748Racing MY2001 42 all built in 2000. So it looks like the MY2000 and MY2001 production were the 748RS with only 94 made.

  10. Thanks Denzil

so does that mean 748RS MY2000 specs were built in 1999 and 2000 and MY2001 spec bikes were built in 2000? IF they were built in 1999 does that mean they were built at the end of the year for racing in 2000 ?
So am i right in sayin MY2000 spec had Showa forks and seperate rev counter and water temp and the MY2001 spec ones had ohlins forks and the all in one dash ??

Also what does MY2000, MY2001 mean??

Sorry for all the questions but im just trying to work out the different specs of them as there does not seem to be much about them that i can find.

    Cheers

  11. Model year

  12. As Bradders has already replied MY is the Model Year. Many vehicles are built during the year prior to the model year. For example my MY02 748S was first registered in March 2002 but the frame has a date stamping May 2001 and the plastics are all date marked for June and July 2001. I don't think there was ever a MY2003 748 but there are many MY02 bikes registered in 2003, some in 2004 and a few after that.
Regarding the details of the bike, Falloon states power for the MY98 and 99 Racing was 108Bhp with a CR of 11.6:1, the bike was fitted with a racing 916 gearbox, CF bodywork including chainguard, sump guard and silencers, front dashboard and ecu mount, Ohlins rear shock. The MY2000 Racing specials had 12.1:1 CR, 124bhp, 996 factory racer injection system, different cams and valve timing, 54mm termis, bigger 280w generator. The MY 2001 bikes were similar except had Ohlins forks (for MY98 to MY2000 he specifies 43mm Showas) and uprated Brembo brakes. He states no RSs were built after 2000 which would indicate that the MY2001 bikes were indeed built the year before they were released. Hope this helps
PS He also states only 42 MY2001 bikes were made in 2000, it is common for folks to mistake the MY with the year built

  13. Sticking in a 996 motor in isn't wrecking the bike.

If you want to play with it on the track its the easiest way without big bills and lots of maintenance. The engine can be kept and fitted whenever you see fit.

There are quite alot of diffences between the pre 2k bikes and later models, mine was the last generation with digital dash, ohlins and the computer at the front in a horizontal position. From memory mine was classed as 2002, but will have to double check.

Ducati had stock of these bikes that were sold off in the early noughties.

    I'll post some pics.

  15. Now I like that idea of keeping to proper motor and putting it back in later.Personally I don't like to see them messed around with that much as I think that makes them a bitsa and therefore a lot less interesting as it was never done when they were raced.

    Please do post some pics.

    So was dean Thomas's 748 he raced in 2000 for d&e a fy2000 RS or a 1999 racing model?

  16. Nice...
so what the rest of the collection I spot a RD and a TZ s it and a couple of ducatis

  17. Check ebay...Riders selling a bunch of 1098RS motors off for 5k...along with some other nice stuff...get a 748 and sling that lump in

  18. That is pics a few years old. The Desmo has gone.

I have a couple of RD350LC's which I have had for quite a few years. One is a race bike with a TZ750 (half) top end, thus 373cc and many more mods.

I have a couple of TZ's, a Harris chassis bike and a standard chassis 350G. Both bikes are heavily prepped as they were built by Tony Smith.

The other Duke is my 999R track bike.

I agree a bike like a 748 RS shouldn't be messed around with and mine was very original.

  19. i take you havent got the rs any more then??
