The standard rear shock on my 2001 Ducati 750 Sport is, erm, shocking! I have been quoted £150+VAT to have it serviced but I think buying a second hand item may be better value. There are plenty on eBay that may fit, including items off 748, 916, ST4 etc Do you know what will fit my bike and does anyone have one for sale please? All assistance gratefully received! Thanks
What's wrong with it exactly? Second hand shocks are a false economy, say you spend £100 on a second hand shock and then it also needs a refurb If it is squeaking and crunching then it needs new bearings, an before you spend hours searching for them I can get them at £20 each. Have you adjusted the shock, it is 3 way adjustable, mine took an age to set up and get it where I like it.
Looking at the 748/916 749/999 and the ST2/4 shocks they are vertically mounted as opposed to diagonally mounted, and on the SS there isn't a lot of room to move around, so I think....think....the orientation would cause issues and might not fit. And looking at your shock, that is different to my 2000 750SS, there shouldn't be a blue anodised part there, that should be a soild reservoir with an adjustable screw, to the best of my knowledge I would say someone has previously fitted a different shock to it. quick check I think someone has fitted a shock from a 92-98 bike. Why not contact Maxton in Frodsham? Thanks for your advice. I'm not too technical so don't know for sure but the shock is very 'boingey' with little or no pre-load damping - it just bounces on the spring. I will take your advice and look at getting it serviced.
600ss, 750ss, 750ssie, 900ss, 900sie fit (900ssie slightly longer so improved front end feel and turn in). 748/9** DONT fit, unless you mod the swingarm to accept the connectining linkage. Maxton, ohlins, Nitron are all nice shocks. The stock shock may not even be worth servicing, and second hand even more of a lottery.
Don't rebuild the shock that is on there though, it is the wrong shock, you have a shock from an earlier bike, not the correct Showa shock that should be fitted.

That's on a 2000 bike.....That said I might be wrong. But no issues or need to rebuild. I'd stretch to that if at all possible, especially if the bike is a keeper for a few years. The blie dial looks lie the same thing as the screw in the oher pic, just nicer and easier to adjust as no tools needed.
The blue dial will adjust how the oil fows in the shock, you will still need tools to adjust the spring itself. Noticed yours is a single disc, meaning a cheaper shock, so I would go down the better rear shock route and get it rebuilt, as opposed to putting the crappy shock back on, it's cheaper to buy a better shock and have it serviced than it is to buy the new shock which isn't as good. And the one I posted is a direct bolt on fit
No problems, if you need the bearings for the Showa unit let me know as I can get hold of them, they are a bugger to track down.
interesting reading as need to look for another shock for mine shame other models shock wont fit did consider trying to match up one from another manufacturer ie yam or suzuki as a temporary fix but another can of worms probably
John, you already have the Showa rear shock though? The way it is mounted, and the way it mounts is vastly different to most bikes
unfortunatly its leaking so just exploring all options first never expected it to straight forward lol
But you do need a screw driver to adjust the damping, the anodised ones doesnt look like it would (ala 916) Chances are any new shock will be way better than an old tired unit, whetever it is I have a feeling one of the iys wo races an SS has a 748Rs shock in his...may also be worth a look, no dea if a Showa one wold fit as they are super cheap
