Mot Prep Although Brake Light Failed

  1. Hi, glad to say the bike is running okay and now trying to get it ready for MOT. I have managed to bleed the back brake by taking the calliper off. Brake light switch needed some WD40 to get it to work. I cant get the front brake light to work. I think maybe its a earth issue? As I have disconnected the rear seat and tail light. I am getting 12volts when i press the front brake light switch or the back brake. But only the back brake light is activating the bulbs. I put brand new bulbs in, bent the tabs at the back. Put a meter on the outside terminals and can see that the power is getting there.
Could the stray 4volts be from a dirty connection elsewhere on the bike? Just about to try cleaning the bulb contact parts which touch the bulb.

  2. The brake light switches are in parallel. So if the light works off the rear switch the problem must lie with the front switch. Use a test lamp to check that power is getting to the front switch. Connect the test lamp to the other switch wire on and check that it lights up when the switch is operated. If not the switch is faulty. If it does the problem lies further down the line and you will need to check continuity between the switch and the brake light.

  3. Derek, thanks. Its strange as I have 12 volts when i press the front brake light switch at the rear light. When the lever is off there is still 4volts reading. I think some where there is a dirty connection or resistance from a switch or connector?

  4. I guess you are measuring with a meter. If there is a high resistance in the circuit, like a dirty connection, the meter will read a voltage if there in no load i.e. no current flowing. If you measure at the same point with the bulb in place you will probably find that the measured voltage is now very low. I recommended using a test lamp because it will only light if enough current flows through it

  5. electrics have a mind of their own. i stripped all the tail light. made no difference. kept pressing the brakes, bit of dwd40 and they are working now.....

  6. Most likely a stckings switch then.

  7. Have you got any wd40 contact cleaner?
