1098 S/fighter - Engine Warn + Fuel Light + Engine Cut

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by fewtrees, Apr 9, 2019.

  1. So I got spooked yesterday as whilst riding along I noticed after every "rewarding" corner the fuel light flashed on briefly then went out..

Then later in the day the "Engine Light" came on but then went out briefly afterwards which I thought was odd - 2 wierdies in 1 day..

Then further down the road the engine light comes on and briefly cuts the engine! Not good for mid corner antics..

I stop and turn the ignition off and back on again. Engine light still on but the engine starts OK..

Ignition off and back on again and the engine light goes out.. Engine starts OK..

Now, there's plenty of fuel in the bike and the battery without the ignition reads above 12v, with the ignition on it goes down to 11.6v but I guess I should expect that as the lights etc are drawing current..

Any advice on what to check/replace?

My thoughts are reg/rec and fuel sender?

  2. The voltage is certainly very low. Most importantly, what does it read with the bike running at about 2,500 rpm? You should be seeing 14-14.5V with a good battery.

  3. About 13 - 13.5v @ 5k rpm

  4. A bit on low side but if the battery isn't good you might expect that. A newly charged battery should read about 12.7V. This will drop off over time but a good battery should be reading at least 12.5V off load. If yours is only reading just over 12V I'd say it needs replacing.

  5. You gotta love internet diagnostics

  6. If the engine light is on there will be a diagnostic code recorded.

With the ignition switched on, but the bike not running, hold the selector switch in the Up/A position until it shows the fault codes on the dash.

Refer to the owner's manual for more info.
