Monster 1000 Ds - Thinking About Buying

  1. I have been looking at a 2005 Monster 1000DS and wondered if there are any particular things I should watch out for. It is very low mileage and has a bit of service history but will need the belts changed as they are more than 3 years old. All the obvious things like brake pads, tyres, chain etc look great but I don’t know enough about this particular model to know what else to check. Any advice gratefully received.

  2. I had an s2r1000 , not sure if that is what you are looking at or the earlier model which had the same engine but was a more traditional monster. Either way you should be ok, wonderful bikes with almost bulletproof engines. What is the mileage?

  3. It’s not an S2R, it’s the traditional monster but looks almost as good. It looks to have done just over 13000 miles would you believe.

  4. No idea what you are paying, not enquiring as it's none of my business but if it scratches your itch then go for it. Maybe get it checked over by an independent specialist and get a belt service. Valve checks due at 15000 miles but see what the specialist says.
Will it be your first duke? If so then a cracking way to start. The 1000ds is my favourite air cooled engine, more grunt than the 900 and smoother than the 1100.

  6. just been to veiw a monster 1000ie as it happens.

am a little suspicious that the mileage/service/usage intervals etc are a bit whacky though, theres a couple of service entries that reckon bike did 10k in just 7months one time n then another 12k following year,in about 9 months.(rest of its life is the normal looking 4-6k a year)

does anyone know if it is possible that the speedo (dual km and mph dialface)could be recording overall mileage in kilometers?

  7. @gregotch It is not uncommon for these to have had the clocks changed so if a secondhand unit was used the mileage could jump.

  8. had a few monsters and my current 1000ds is by far my fave. easily the best engined of the best shape 'old style' monsters. only thing to watch on them is early ones had valve guide issues which mine fell foul of the and the belts being changed is it really.
