749 Strange Ecu / Cluster Problem

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Christian.miles, May 4, 2019.

  1. Hi all,

This is my first post on here so hopefully it is in the right place etc.

I seem to have an odd problem that isn’t documented or replicated anywhere else, I have spent hours looking!

I have a 749 standard set up that has developed a very strange hot start issue. When cold it acts as it should, key turns ignition on, it goes through its normal checks and I’m left with the usual icons etc. On the dash lcd display. The bike starts fine and there are no errors or issues while riding the bike.

Once hot (90 degrees+) if I turn off the ignition and then turn it back on again the bike goes into lap recall mode. It is as though the right push flap is depressed (the routine to get into lap recall mode) this is further compounded because when I then hold only the left push button on the dash it enters into the machine select mode where I can enter the correct machine type, in this case 749 en. Often if I am not quick enough it will then go straight to off, as though I have held in the right button, but haven’t pressed it in at all.

I have removed the cluster and tested both switches with a multi meter and they are working as you would expect. In fact their outputs are the same both sides when open and closed on the circuit.

I am quite sure it is not the button but in that case am at an absolute loss as to what the problem could be.

If I then leave the bike for 15 minutes or so, it is absolutely fine again without any trace of this problem until hot again.

@chrisw you seem to be an absolute guru in this arena so really hooting you can shed some light on this very odd problem?! I am literally at my wits end...

    Thanks for readin.

    Christian

  5. Ha, yeah I may need to add some pedals to this one if I can’t work it out....for when it’s hot at least!

  6. A real head scratcher for sure,good luck:upyeah:

  7. Welcome.
Strange problem, sorry I cannot help though.

  9. Ahh what I shame, I was really holding my hopes out on you, your sagely advice seems to have helped a lot of people. Not to worry I will try those guys you have mentioned. The dash has only been apart since this problem displayed and the little locators are all in the right places.

Could this be an ECU issue? I don't believe it is the dash now having checked it, but I am struggling to see how it could be ECU too?

  10. Sounds like a dash issue.

  11. Yes it does to me too, but it only happens when the engine gets hot, once back down to 30-35 degrees it is as good as gold again. I have sent the guys at scorpio a message, see what their take is. Thanks again for your time and suggestions.

  12. Welcome to the forum:)

  13. Ok so bit of an update. Spoken to the guy from scorpio. He isn't sure either. His best suggestion was try another dash and see if you get the same behaviour.

Now - Is there someone kind enough and local to the east mids that would lend me their cluster for a day to see if I can rule this out? Either that or does anybody have a spare 749/999 clock lying around that I can pick up cheaply?

Thanks all for your help and warm welcome.

  14. Not quite that simple. The dash is coded to the ECU. It would be easier if someone with an Immo Disabled ECU 749/999 fitted your dash to test.

  15. I thought you may say that. Not ideal. So in that case anyone available in that category?!

This is looking like one of those problems that just doesn’t get solved... :-(

  16. Sorry I can't help with your issues but welcome to the forum

  17. Another quick update. Having had some more time I have tested the voltage of each of the wires running from the loom to the dash connector. It seems that the only discrepancy I can see is the can+ and can- wires which when cold show 2.5 volts each. However when hot one goes down to 0.02v and the other to 4.8.

I kept an eye on this and as the bike cools down, both voltages normalise back to 2.5 volts and when that happens the dash comes to life and the bike starts.

@chrisw apologies for pulling you onto this once again but is this a symptom you have seen before?

  18. Bit simplistic but the Can Bus system has Can Hi and Can Lo. Hi = 3.5v Lo = 1.5v the voltage difference between the two allows multiple data to be sent over 2 wires. Not seen a Can Bus error on the IAW59M or IAW5AM ECUs before, but it is a possibility. I can send you a loan ECU to try. Just a royal PIA to swap on the 749/999.

  19. Hi Chris,

That sounds fantastic! I have the side unit off to expose the ecu already as I cleaned up the heat sink thinking it was maybe overheating. All connections are clean and nice.

Would the lender have the immo disabled so it’ll work? I’ll obviously throw a few quid your way for the inconvenience. Where are you based? How would be best to get it over to me?
