Chain Snapped

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Conradv2, May 7, 2019.

  1. I bought a cheap chain to run my sprockets out on my 620 monster but less than a week after fitting the spring link has snapped vaporising the hugger and putting a hole in the engine casing. I'm furious as I questioned the supplier about using a spring link and they said it would be fine. I have a lot of experience fitting chains along so I know it was fit and tensioned perfectly.

Probably angry with myself for letting the supplier convince me of what I knew was a bad idea.

So where do I stand . does the supplier owe me a new hugger and engine case and recovery costs?

    Grrrrrr

  2. I have used split link on M620 and raced it and no problems. As has probably the whole Desmodue grid for many seasons. Mine used to be about £30 motox chain.

Don't think you can get anything, just chalk up to experience IMHO

  3. Split links are useless most chains I've seen snapped over the years are split links opening, did you put a new chain on old sprockets also ?

  4. Zero come back. It was your choice to put the chain on there even though you knew it was risky. Suck it up, you might have been ok and saved some cash I suppose ;)

  5. Yes new chain on old sprockets. I'm not expecting any comeback but still major scunnered. Can they just supply chocolate and then its your own fault for fitting it ? There must be a limit. Consumers rights etc. I'll calm down by Christmas hopefuly.

  6. I would contact the seller anyway and try your luck, give him the "not fit for purpose" line, worst thing he can say is piss off.

  7. A bit late now, but fit a case saver as part of the repair.

Someone on there might have a spare hugger they’d part with. Maybe even a spare case saver.

  14. I have done a hugger before and they are surprisingly cheap from Ducati..... shock horror. Thanks for the advice.

  15. Buy cheap, buy a new engine..

  16. The old chain had some tight spots but the sprockets didn't look that bad so the idea was to run them out on a cheap chain. I've done that a few times now without a problem. I don't think wear changes the pitch. When I was a bike courier -- way back(shudder)--- I ran them until they were like 50p pieces, more of a friction drive then. I'm definitely blaming this one on the chocolate spring link.

  17. I had a split link clip come off on one of my bikes, luckily the end plate stayed on, I took it to a local bike shop to have them fit a rivet link, he said that in recent years he’d seen an increase in spring clips coming off and thought its maybe the manufacturers cost cutting and not using the correct grade steel or heat treating the clips correctly, anyway he refuses to fit them anymore, real bad luck you had there.

  18. Thanks Mark , never again for me.

  19. nothing like taking responsibility for your actions....;)

  20. I sold one of my bikes yesterday, the two bikers that came to pick it up had both had spring clips come off in the last couple of years, strangely I noticed on the bike they turned up on a split link was fitted, go figure!
