Just wondering if this is the same one that's installed on one of my Guzzis which used the Ducati Energia system. It's because the Guzzi also has that single phase alternator. I'm told that the original Rectifier is a series type, which is a little unusual. In order to get rid of the excess electricity (if you pardon me putting it so crudely, Oh & please forgive me if I am teaching my Granny, as we would say here) there are 2 approaches. You can open circuit the generator, or you can short circuit it. The open circuit approach can lead to high voltages being generated in the Stator, by opening the connections from the generator. The short circuit approach (or shunt regulation & is by far the most common type of regulation in motorcycles) does the opposite and closes the connections together, this usually generates more heat and works by collapsing the voltage. IF it's the same as the Guzzi there are quite a few owners who replaced the original Series type with a Shindengen Shunt unit (FH020AA) and have not reported any failures, or problems. Shendengen also manufacture a series regulator but it's not cheap You are in Umerika aren't you? So this guy could possibly help if you choose the Shindengen route (which is the way I'd go) but it's all down to personal choice https://www.roadstercycle.com/ Beware $$$$$$$ John
Thanks, John. Indeed, I am in the U.S. (or shall I say...the Colonies). Since the old Electrex RR51 had served me well for over 2 decades, I would probably choose not to spend a great sum of money on something that would outlast my statistical life expectancy.
I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I installed a MOSFET regulator/rectifier from Rick's Motorsport Electrics which appears to have solve the problem. No illuminated "no charge" light. No excessive voltage at the battery. Thanks again.
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I just purchased a MOSFET regulator from Ricks, part #10_001H and have a question about wiring to the dash indicator light. I assume I can connect the blue wire from the regulator to the white/red wire and the black from the regulator to the red/black?
