748 748 Engine Swap

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Markel, May 24, 2019.

  1. Hello

l have a 1998 748 and need a new motor. l found the helpful Gotham article about swaps but have a more detailed question.

1, Will the complete clutch pack from a pre 1999 748 fit directly onto a post 1998 748

2, Will the complete stator assy from a pre 1999 748 fit directly onto a post 1998 748

l understand how its going backwards from a 3 wire setup to a two, its just there are plently of 1999+ motors and not many pre. l dont want to go into the arseache of fitting a 916....if i want to go faster, i take the avatar.

Thanks everyone, i had a good search but couldn't find a definite answer.

  2. I think the clutch will.I think the genny wont!I believe the single and three phase alternator set ups are totally different. One having the magnets spinning inside the windings, the other having the magnets spinning outside of the windings.I believe the shape of the end of the crank where the rotor fits,to be different.Having said that,I would wait for someone more knowledgable to confirm/deny this!

  3. Crank lengths different
    Alt covers different

  4. Isn't a pre 99 the same thing as a post 98?

  5. You can go from a 1ph to a 3ph with mods.
Crank is shorter on a 3ph, so don't think its poss to go from 3ph to 1ph.

  6. No :bucktooth:

  9. Could someone please tell me exactly what's involved in swapping a 3 wire motor into a 2 wire roller. lve read that you need to swap the whole loom/harness..............and ive read there is a way around it................but no info as to what this is.

    Cheers.

  11. Because it was a continuation of the same thread.

  12. Is your 748 2 wires or 3 wires coming out of the alternator cover?

With your alternator cover removed does it look like this?

If it’s MY98 and earlier it shouldnt look like above, the wiring will be on the crankshaft.

AFAIK you may have to change your rec/reg depending what year you have and what year you buy.

  13. Depending which engine you get gives different problems to overcome, none are difficult but they add up, some of the later engines have the dropped head (testa bassa) which I don't know but could need a different front exhaust, as mentioned newer engine three phase might need a newer reg rec, the neutral switch is different, two wires on the early and single wire on the later engines.
