They make life easier but it is possible to do it without, however, for 9.50 I'd go for it, it'll save time on the job trying to hold the cam wheel in position.

 

That's a bit pricey. OEM prices for 748/916 belts are around £125 the pair.

 

and @Exige's are even better value for money.

I have two, or even possibly three. Bought some years ago. No longer have a 748. They are variations and only the last one fitted. Happy to post to you if they’re of any use. FOC.
