What would this show though? Other than metallic bits in the oil and that something is wrong? I’m guessing it would be rockers you are talking about that might be at fault? If the chrome had come off would it make this sound?
I took my bike to St Neots MC they had a listen said they thought they could hear something (although it’s easier to hear when riding) they suggested having a look at the rockers as flaking chrome syndrome may have occurred.
They ought to able to detect that by checking the oil filter and sump plug before removing and stripping down the top of the engine.
I think they are just going to have a look rather than strip it down. I’ll drop the oil before hand to see what comes out.
I know I’m a bit late to this thread, but @Pidge1969, did you ever figure out what was causing the sound? I have the exact same sound from my 2001 748s…
@Pidge1969 has not been here for 6 weeks but hopefully this tag will help. the answer to your question does usually open a large container of platyhelminths and there are many threads on here that try to address this. Finding a reputable specialist to listen to the sound your engine is making, first hand, is definitely worth doing to start with, imo. https://www.google.com/search?q=ducati+748++engine+noise&rlz=1C1SQJL_enGB894GB894&sxsrf=ALiCzsam6ffVV6FOorUQIN4BWQuUKDlqgw:1652044337697&ei=MTJ4YquPKpOcgQaZ1qhA&ved=0ahUKEwjr65rf6ND3AhUTTsAKHRkrCggQ4dUDCA4&uact=5&oq=ducati+748++engine+noise&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBQgAEKIEMgUIABCiBDIFCAAQogQ6BwgAEEcQsAM6CggAEEcQsAMQyQM6BAgjECc6BggAEAcQHjoICAAQBxAKEB5KBAhBGABKBAhGGABQ-wpYiCBgnCFoAXABeACAATuIAZgCkgEBNZgBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=gws-wiz
