748 Ignition barrel sized.

  1. Bike has been in storage for about a year and a half.

Key goes in just doesn't turn, tried penetrating fluid, graphite, took the ignition assembly off the bike and have been trying to free it off every few hours whilst soaking it in penetrating fluid.

Is there any way of striping it down further?

Don't really want to be buying a new ignition assembly, fuel cap and seat lock and if it comes to it I'll just wire in a switch to get on the road. To that end does anyone have a wiring diagram of the ignition and wiring in a switch by any chance?

I know it wont be secure but I'll just have to take my starter relay with me if I'm leaving the bike anywhere unsecured.

  2. Have a look at the key, if the lock is siezed or stiff, it might have become twisted, putting everything out of alignment, making it less likely to turn in the lock.

Straighten it out, and try again. Never had a Ducati ignition lock to bits, but had a twisted key in my 750/900ss.

Let us know what you find!

  3. Key works in the petrol cap and seat lock but did have a look at the alignment, all looks fine, did give it as much of a tweak as I could considering I cant find my spare!

Starting to realise its going to be a switch job!

Found a wiring diagram of sorts, off to Maplin, thankfully its a walk away!

  4. Taken the thing apart and its the fork lock that has rusted an seized solid. Means the key wont turn in any direction due to the way its set up in there.

Never use the fork lock anyway will probably drill it out.

Well I know the key works now, ignition assembly is in its component parts on my table after a small amount of hammering... No drilling required.

Usual Ducati level of complication involved!

  5. I've got a spare ignition lock & key as I ended up buying 2 locksets for my recent project, unfortunately it wasn't a 'proper' lockset as the ignition & fuel cap had different keys (which is why I'm not using it) but it works fine. PM me if you're interested.

  6. Cheers for the offer and the links, think I have it sorted, have freed off the mechanical components so long as the electrical gubbins all go back hopefully it will work in the morning.

Not easy though, nearly lost a finger!

  7. Well, all back together and now the ignition relay has packed in, doubt I'll find anywhere open today that will sell me one so off to the pub!
