My double bubble screen managed to get a crack on the top edge so I looked around to replace it. Lots of caution about the lower 2 Torx bolts and the captive nuts on all the forums I looked at so I expected to have some fun! Having looked around at the various options, I bought my screen from HPS - great looking screen at a good price. When it turned up I was surprised to find it comes with 8 plastic push and lock "rivets" that are replacements for the Torx bolts. So rather than take the front fairing off, I removed the old screen lost the 2 nuts inside the lower end of the fairing, fitted the new screen, used the old upper Torx bolts at the top of the screen and push fitted these plastic rivets to the bottom fixings. What a brilliant piece of simple engineering. And I still have 6 more left over for future screens if needed. If you are looking for a replacement screen, check out HPS - other screen suppliers may also include these plastic rivets too but HPS certainly do. sounds like a good solution for you.. for me my OCD would not let me sleep until i had retrieved the 2 lost well nuts.. as i would have mental pictures of them blocking the fan or something lol
I’ve got one of those stupid threaded bung things rattling around my nose cone somewhere too. Stupid design. When I’m bored I’ll remove the fairing and find it.
Plenty of time to recover those well nuts when there is real work to do in removing the fairing. I'll put them in the bag with the other spare bolts ready for another time
It’s not just Ducati. Lost a big well nut off friends Africa Twin the other day swapping screens. Even less of a clue how to remove the top fairing on that bike
on my 1299 I managed to fish them out with a long allen key, when refitting dabbed a bit of super glue on them worked fine, and have never taken it of since..
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but only recently got my first Duc, an 899 Panigale, so these are the types of things I'm now discovering. I can't believe how awkward Ducati made the screen fittings! The mirror gaskets aside, they could have just used Well Nuts for the bottom two screws, then no losing nuts in the fairing. I thought changing the RSV4 screen was fiddly, with fitting its locating tabs in the relevant screen holes, but that was easy compared to Ducati's approach. My 899 is stock and I was intending on keeping it that way for a change, but the lack of dash sun protection at the bottom of the OEM clear screen makes me uncomfortable. I quite like MRA screens and they have the blacked out bottom to protect the dash, so if I do brave changing the 899 screen, the MRA light smoke is the likely contender. The other thing I've considered is to fit a piece of thin black film to the outside of the bottom of the OEM screen to at least shield the dash from the sun.
i have the MRA smoked screen on my 1299 and it works well, on the 1199 i have a Givi LCR screen which is similar.
I took the the nose off in the end, problem I have now is can't get the connector plug back in the wing mirror, gave up buggering about with it so now it's just loose. What crappy difficult design. New dark screen looks the part,
I fitted a Puig yesterday the first thing i did was glue the well nuts to the screen, looks great but what is annoying is the mirrors will not fully close.
I had a look around the bottom of my 899's screen yesterday and I can't even see the lower nuts, let alone being able to get hold of them with pliers to stop them dropping into the fairing.
Just spent the best part of 2 hours farting around with the stoopid screen and its stoopid, rubbery, useless, terribly designed, hard to find in the depths of your nose cone well nuts. Was doing some prep on the 1199s, in advance of Tuesday at Silverstone: Removing wing mirrors, fitting me new GoPro mounts etc etc and was not aware that this was a well known and documented arse of a problem. Lost one of the nuts in the nose cone, and proceeded to then loose my rag many many times. Superglued my fingers together making a bespoke well nut recovery tool out of cable ties, pics, magnets and electrical tape. After failing to refit the screen many times due to the “wank nuts” refusing to play ball, I replaced them with a metal nut and bolt which looks absolute gash but will at least stay firmly in place for next weeks frivolities. What an absolutely stoopid design. Whomever is responsible, deserves to contract a serious dose of blue waffle to the face. Really pissed on my chips and made fitting my new mount a chore rather than a pleasurable experience. Any suggestions on replacements gratefully received as when Silverstone is over, the wing mirrors need going back. Cheers
Ducati have been building racers back to the 50s then only little singles. They are specialists at making the customer feel that ownership is an event, in every way right down to cutting your favourite spanner to fit. There are bikes out there you can thrash the bollocks out of day in day out. Some days I curse my Pani but it makes me grin like my Staffies, good luck at Silverstone.
I cut the top off my bottom screen screw and glued it on (low strength) as was a real PITA to do properly. Will sort it out properly when mag dash/lamp holder is sourced&fitted
