Please can anyone explain what on earth is going on? Have just swapped exhausts to a set of Termi's so nothing majorly clever executed. I now find that when I close the seat unit there is a huge gap between the seat pad and the end of the tank! The seat unit has only been opened - nothing on it or anything that it attaches to has been touched. The hinge works, nothing's loose, nothing obviously blocking movement, locks down tight. What's going on? Am I losing the plot somewhere? I know it reached before as I've got photos taken a couple of days earlier! There is a thread on a different forum but that suggests reversing brackets and stuff. I don't see why that should be necessary as nothing is any different. The image was poached from elsewhere but it shows the sort of gap I've got.
How bizarre,with the hinge & the latch locator in a fixed position it should be in the same place everytime when closed.Have you moved the tank forward slightly
Check the seat is latching correctly and that it slides forward and down on the hinge freely as you locate the hooks on the side. Also have you bolted the exhaust straps correctly on the hangers? Some photos of your exhaust strap mounts, seat hooks and the latch might be useful
The tank hasn't been touched ..... that's beyond my approved technical level! Having unbolted and removed the latch the result stays the same. Disconnect the front hinge and suddenly everything fits as it should do. Unfortunately you can't see into the hinge area when it isn't working to find out what's going on! I guess it's going to be rider seat pad removal to get a better view. However, removing the four main bolts would appear to not release as the leading edge stays firmly fixed - or do I need to be more brutal? The only other fixings at the front edge are for the hinge bracket.
Are you sure the two hinge bracket screws don't fix into the seat pad base through the seat unit? Also confirm the two hinge pins are inserted from outside inward with the rubber link between them and the pins are inserted with the sprung part of the hinge held under tension away from the tank
Having looked a bit closer (and checked some other posts) it would appear that the seat is also attached through the hinge bracket. Hinge pins are fitted outside to in with the rubber link. When the seat is removed and the hinge allowed to assume its sprung position it's top link position goes towards the tank ie. when away from the tank the spring is under tension. I assume this is correct?
The hinge will swing either forwards or rearwards.Hold the seat in its most open position.You can swing the hinge in a small ark.Hard to explain!!!Just make sure the hinge end of the seat is in the forward swing of that ark.Then close the seat.I know what I mean anyway!
Helping? Ok.. I'll try.. just been and looked at the 748 and the gap is alot smaller but I do remember when I rebuilt it, it took a bit of jiggery pokery to get it that way. It's been an age but from memory it was a mix of backing the tank holding bolt out, sliding tank back and retightening ( this only gained a few mm) and swapping out the rubber seat hinge thing for a fancy quick release one.. I do remember looking at several other 916/748 bikes at the time and they all had different seat to tank gaps and some alot bigger than the op's pic. What @keith916 is saying kinda rings true and is perhaps what I should have looked at!
As the Termis bolt on at the rear, where your seat catch sits, I'd be looking there. When I had my 916 / 996 bikes, I seem to remember the hinge was on a spring that moved fore and aft to whatever position the catch and catch post pulled it to.
The pin attached to the seat fairing underside and the latch it fits in will determine how far forward/backwards the seat unit sits on the subframe.
That makes sense... I vaguely remember messing with that as well but that may have been due to me refitting it after plating..
