Hello,I have have a 98 900ss ie, not over keen on the fuel injection, like the smoother ride of carbs and less complexitiy, what I'm wondering is would it be possible to put one of these on it if I made my own manifolds. What choke/jet sizes would I need for a good spread of power,I want mid range grunt over top speed, can't afford those K&N ones lol.Cheers! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1pcs-of-...332602?hash=item3d8630883a:g:EFYAAOSwk2tcwXPb
A fuel injected bike is so much easier to set up to run smoothly. I never did get my carb SS quite right. It did sound lovely though, much better than my 999 with double the power...
Ok cheers, just trying to get reliability, already changed the clutch cylinder, now having an issue with the front cylinder cutting out and lack of power.Seems the engine is sound but the ancillaries are not brilliant.haven't got an awful lot of money to spend on it.
The front cylinder is vulnerable to road spray, so it could just be the plug. I had trouble with losing a cylinder on my SS and it turned out to be the alternator nut coming loose and allowing the flywheel to wobble about, thus taking out one of the pickups. However, being an injected bike, I think you may well have a cps rather then pickups.
I replaced the plugs, still out, played with the leads,2 big fat yellowish sparks.Starts and idles fine but seems a bit bit flat now, plugs are very sooty. It was evil before!Have ordered some new leads.(Should've bought a Guzzi, lol)Cheers!
I’ve owned 2 1000ie engine Ducs and 2 900 rubber band carb’d Ducs , despite the rough edges of the carb’d engine characteristics I much preferred them to the almost blandness of the injected 1000
You’ll avoid carb icing by staying with the injection, it really is an issue on carbed 900’s once temperatures get below 10 degrees, probably best to book it in at a Ducati specialist, by the time you’ve bought this and that trying to fix it using the shot gun approach it will probably end up costing you more.
I`ve never heard the 1000ie engines being described as bland before, I currently have bikes with both 900 carb and 1000ie engines , they are both lovely to use and both communicate with the rider as you go along. Each to his own of course but I`d take the 1000 every time.
Well I was a car mechanic in the 80s when FI started becoming popular,I never liked the all or nothing power or the complexity, but i must admit this thing pulls like a train when it's on song but is an absolute pig around town...
I'll probably carry on with it for now,if it plays up badly I may consider a carb conversion.Pod filters next.
Sorry I don’t know the choke sizes but fixing it’s around town manners is easy, just fit a bigger rear sprocket, I just went from 37 (standard) to 40 on my M900 and it makes it far more pleasant at low speed , would ideally have gone to 41 teeth but just happened to have a 40 tooth sprocket in the garage , can’t tell any difference in the cruising revs (no tachometer) but it’s probably gone up 3 or 400 revs at 70mph, definitely recommend this mod.
Like all old mechanics, electronics make me nervous,lol..And I fancied the idea of a big twin 40 downdraft dellorto like the used to use on rally cars and tuned Beetles. You'd have to play with the jetting.Would look damn good as well I reckon and be dead simple.
