Ducati motorcycle of some sort

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Albatross, Apr 11, 2013.

  1. Now we're talking! Steve Wynne, you say. Thank you, gliddofglood - first bit of concrete information I have regarding the bike. I'll try to find out more about the forks. Can you perhaps confirm that it indeed is a 900SS?

So much for the Desmo part. Someone who saw the bike insisted that it is a Desmo, but that was mostly because of the black frame work that I got with it. Still, having no better leads, I placed an ad for a Desmo.

I've also been told that it was a Mike Hailwood replica, presumably that later one, but when I compared it to the images of the actual replica, made by Ducati (if I am not mistaken), apart from the colour, there was very little resemblance. Being unable to find a match, I figured it must've been a custom job but that's about as far as I got.

Right now, all I'm getting is calls from people who are telling me that they are interested in a bike, but that it isn't worth more than € 2,000 - 3,000, which I believe isn't a fair assessment.

  2. Albatros,

there is a link in my earlier mail to sports motorcycles, i would suggest you follow that and send them a mail, i am sure that would be your best bet for finding some firm info.

Steve Wynne used to supply frame kits, fork kits etc.

The black fairing you have looks to me to be from a late 70's 900ss. I suspect that what you have is a 900ss that has received a fair amount of modification / upgrade. Checking the vin with Ducati should reveal the bikes original incarnation

Desmo?, a generic term for most of the Ducati range of this era (desmodromic valves). So yes it is a Desmo, probably a 900ss Desmo.

i would venture to suggest however, that if it was still an original, unmodified late 70's 900ss, it would probably be worth more !

Just my opinion for what it's worth.

  3. It is not a hailwood replica. Well not one of the road bikes anyway. That tank and seat, one piece unit was produced by Harris and possibly others as an aftermarket part.
Therefore i agree with the other poster that the black fairing is possibly original.

If we could see a picture of the frame tubes under the tank it would help to determine whether Darmah based or 900 ss.

  4. Steve is in New Zealand but you can email him at [email protected] and point him to the pictures, as he may be able to tell you more about it.

  5. albatross if you want to prove you own the bike post a picture of the bike with a bottle of beer sitting on the tank.

  6. Seems to have gone quiet over there. Perhaps Albatross has found something called an 'Olympus' but doesn't know what it is?

  7. Perhaps he's waiting for the "offy" to open?

I am still having trouble understanding what possible good would pretending that I have a motorcycle that I know nothing about do me? It wouldn't even pass for decent trolling. But no matter. Oh, and sorry for the obscure beer, it's a local brand and I couldn't be bothered to go look for something know, but all beer bottles look the same so...

    So, proof enough? :)

  10.

well you got to laugh least he has a sense of humour ..........

  11. Albatross, I apologise for doubting.
Your bike looks like something quite special to me, and I hope you get a good price for it.

  12. If keith916 comes in with £20 and a packet of wotsits, I'll double it. In fact, I could probably stretch to a box - cheesy or bar-b-que?? One time offer, but the wotsits are in the bank so you'll have to wait until Monday until i can release funds. Photos on request

  13. I don't know what offy is. Despite that, I find Greyman's post somewhat amusing.

No need to apologize, cockneyjanner. All is well.

@antonye: Thank you for Steve's email. I'll give it a go.

@JRW: I wrote to ducati yesterday, gave them both the engine and chassis #, and a few pictures but still no reply. We'll see how that's gonna work out.

@Desmoboy: Who's Harris, now? Here are couple of pictures of the frame tubes. I hope these are of some use. . .

  14. Oh yeah, these are the above mentioned parts which came with the bike...

...but whether or not these belong - or rather used to belong to this particular vehicle, I do not know. Perhaps someone can tell me what precisely was it that these parts were once, well, part of?

  15. Sorry Albatross, Hellcat's robbed the bank!!

    hellcat stole my wotsits.jpg

The deal's off I'm afraid, apologies :frown:

  17. Apologies Albatross. My cynicism was unworthy. Well done for proving me wrong.

looks to me like the original parts were from a 900ss from 78, 79 or 80 at a guess. The early 900ss from 1976 were blue and silver.

  18. All right, enough pissing about now! From the various photos this bike appears to be a 1979 900SS bevel black & gold, which has had several modifications, to whit: frame painted red, tank and seat replaced by what appears to be a Harris fibreglass tank and seat unit, fairing replaced by one shaped like the NCR race fairing used on the Hailwood 1978 TT winning bike, 2-into-one exhaust on the left (not clear in photos), white-face Veglia rev counter, paint red with green bits vaguely like a MHR, various stickers. There is no knowing what the inside of the engine is like, obviously. If the bike was in excellent original condition and good running order, with original paintwork, tank, seat, fairing and exhaust - maybe £15,000 max. As it stands, maybe £5,000. Anyone want to correct me?

  19. I am guessing that me selling the bike is in some way causing all the funnies, but considering the fact that the thing is located in Croatia, I'm lost as to what good attempting to scam members of an UK message board would bring me, as I obviously would not be able to sell it to anyone here.

@bigredduke: No problem, really. And yes, this bike is from 1979.

@Pete: Thank you very much, sir! Info you have provided is of tremendous use to me. Thank you.
