996 clutch " groan "

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by allyboy, Apr 13, 2013.

  1. Hi folks, took the 996 a short run today after being sat up for winter. I've fully prep'd her, service/belts/tyres/fully charged battery etc.
Pulling away in 1st I'm getting a kind of low groan, certainly not a grinding. Wondering if its the slave cylinder ?? Bikes pulling fine, no slip. Any thoughts/advice appreciated as always. Cheers, Ally

  2. May be worth whipping the clutch cover off.Check the little bearing in the endplate and give your plates a dust off.

  3. Hi Allyboy,
i'd suggest that it's probably a sign that the clutch needs cleaning out. It's a very easy job to do, as you take the plates out just note the order. Clean the steel plates with brake cleaner, and the clutch drum with brake cleaner. Be careful not to breath in the dust. When you re-assemble just use hand pressure to tighten the Allen screws otherwise you can break the posts off.

  4. I was going to clean the plates but 1 of the Allen bolts is rounded out. Currently have an Allen key setting in it with some quick steel type stuff & try it again tomorrow. There was quite a bit of dust on the pressure plate & inside the casing.
I'm sure guy I bought it from last year said he put 1098 plates in it. I have what I assume are the originals in a box with loads of other parts.

  5. If you struddle with the Allen screw, try a pair of mole grips, push down on the collar with the grips and then tighten them.

  6. Cheers Steve, I'll try that tomorrow along with the Allen key.
It's a 2000 model with only 6.5k miles. I've had a few teething problems, nothing much, but I absolutely love it.
