I have charging issues. Or do I?

  1. So the other night I were hacking the old 95 750ss home in a rainstorm when the charging light came on. Oops, I thought. But there was no change in performance. The lights didn't get dim, or brighter, and it got me the eight miles home with that little red light a-glowing.
Parked it in the garage, decided not to use it for work till I could check it out, assumed the reg/rec had gone.

Went out today, bought a cheap multi meter, went down to garage. Battery showing 12v. started up. Battery showed 14v. revved it. 14.5v. backed off. back to 14. Turned on lights. No change. Red light still a-glowing. pulled apart all the connectors, wd40'd the lot. No change. red light still glowing. Red light glows brighter if I rev it.

Now I don't want to trust it till i can get that light off, so here's my 1st question: Anyone any idea whats going on?

And my second: Where the bloody hell is the reg/rec situated? I can't find the thing anywhere...
    all help gratefully recv'd etc...

  2. Welcome home cheddar...the eg is situated just above the oil cooler underneath the steering head....a finned box about 100mm x 70mm...sounds like its beginning to go home......unplug the yellow wires coming from the alternator and measure across them, you should see around 50+ volts.....and about 14.5v across the battery when they are plugged in.....

  3. cheers, NM. I'll have to get the fairing off and have a rummage. Think I'll rely on the old Fiat till its sorted

  4. Some would say relying on fiat is just as big mistake ;D

  5. Heh. I like to live dangerously. Besides I've had four Fiats now, and only one has been truly rubbish... And that was Polish.

  6. My Fiat van is reliable enough, as was my old fiat Mirafiori, as is my Alfa, as is my Ducati......

  7. Yep we made some shit Italian fiats in Poland hehe. Apparently they are now better, most of the Abarth's 500 and all 500 special editions (like the F1 one) are built in Poland. Two of the worst one's I ever had were: Fiat 125, I actually had this colour rally replica [IMG]

and Fiat 126p which looked about like this one just red. View attachment 1900

I am a bit sarcastic with that as I had number of fiats and they were all quite good bar those mentioned above. Saying that the small 126p makes for a great off-road go-cart style vehicle.

  8. It's worthwhile to check the earthing of the regulator. If I recall correctly, there is a wire from the regulator ( mounted under the steering head as previously mentioned) that is earthed to the bottom yoke, easy to undo the bolt, clean and retighten.

  9. Now I know where it is I shall be cleaning everything - the poor beastie had spent a very wet night in the open and was being ridden in a monsoon, so I can but hope. I'm bracing myself for the £120 bill though!

  10. curious. it seems to have fixed itself. which is nice...
