Yes. Im looking for a mount now for my Samsung S8. Running Copilot western europe. Around £30. Will be comparing directly with a Garmin 350 and Garmin mount already fitted. So far (in car use comparison for both) the Copilot has been more competent than the Garmin with less silly off piste, wtf moments!
When I first got back into biking 12 years ago I tried using a Garmin Nuvi fitted into a waterproof casing, however after going on a couple of European tours I fond most the time I was riding blind as everyone else had the routes downloaded on their Zumos. Following that I bit the bullet and bought one myself. Unfortunately Garmin Base Camp takes some getting use too, however there are some good YouTube Videos which show you the basics and if you persevere it becomes second nature, it is very worthwhile staying with it. Every year I also do the Round Britain Rally, this entails finding and photographing around 90 fairly obscure landmarks all around the country, once again my Zumo is invaluable as I can pinpoint the exact location of the landmark by using a combination of Base Camp, Google Maps, and Streetview.
A lot of the more basic Sat navy’s don’t allow you to download your own routes (I speak from experience). I agree Basecamp is not intuitive but it will work for you if you want to plan more complex routes (most of the time).
That's probably true if it's a low-end model but I only buy the Full-Featured High Res units. This is a Ducati forum, we don't do "basic" here. BTW, the OP's topic is asking if he can use a car sat nav on a bike. I responded because that's what I have. Quite a few of them in fact. As an aside, uploading custom routes onto a full-featured Nuvi is super easy: 1) Get a free copy of Garmin Mapsource (or BaseCamp which is to use) . 2) Draw your route 3) Save it (give it a name) as a GPX file on your desktop 4) Plugin your Nuvi with a USB cable 5) Drag and drop this file into the GPX folder of your unit. That's it Go to Apps/ Trip Planner on your Nuvi and select the route you just uploaded
Yep sorted with this now thanks folks. Decided on the iconic mounting arm and a ram case for my garmin satnav unit. I could go down the handlebar mounted route but I like the look of the above the dash mount and if I do decide to go all out and buy a bike dedicated unit I can still use the iconic mount so not money wasted. Thanks again all for your input. Been a great help. I'll probably fit it at the same time as removing and cleaning the rear hub. Should be a nice weekend works with a few beers for sure ;-)
@Vtwin4fun There's a power line under the cowling for your GPS which you'll probably need an adapter to covert to USB. I haven't used that one yet and may or may not explore it in the spring. What I have now works well. It's a simple solution that runs a USB cable from back to front using the USB jack under the pillion seat. I moved that jack closer to the battery for convenience. It's ignition switched as well and will not draw power while the bike is off.
Cheers Darr, I was just going to plug it into the USB port in the tank bag but I'll look to do that now I know. Will be cleaner and also mean I wont always need to put the tank bag on.
@Vtwin4fun Thanks for those cheers. Really appreciate it and glad to help. This is by far my favorite forum. Glad to share. Really nice platform with lots of knowledge and experience. I learn plenty from those on here.
I personally don't like the SatNav up on the windscreen, but use a car Sat Nav too. £15 used garmin Nuvi on local Facebook market. £6 12V to 5V lead from amazon. A smear of silicone around the SatNav screen/frame gap (that's how I made it waterproof). Powered from the spare 12V connector under the left hand side tank cover. Bracket fixed over the hands free cover. As I don't use it very often preferring being lost and find my North on my own, it works just fine when I need it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/16LRYr2OcQ-FAUWWrcPoXQv-EEtXhJoEU/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/16YiqxHKMn0LM_lT6f3mBdsxAsfeAsJzj/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/16UDfpvX4iLnfQBhLoh5Vt8PwkK-AF5nx/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/16W2mYfQWxHLumdKHdqa-0H53NYPiSpuC/view?usp=drivesdk
